Flying in the Air Race Classic  from General Aviation News by GAN Staff | GAN contributing writer Amelia Reiheld and her partner, Linda Keller, will take off in the Air Race Classic June 21. We'll follow their adventures online, but first a look at how the partnership began: What have I gone and gotten myself into this time? It started simply enough. Complicated things usually do. I heard via the grapevine that there was a woman based at Alabama's Mobile Regional Airport (MOB) planning to fly the Air Race Classic this year, joining the all-women cross-continental airplane derby. Happening to be in my hometown visiting, and sniffing a possible story, I gave Linda Keller a call. Blackbird  from I n f o r m a t i o n 2 S h a r e by pawangkul | The Lockheed SR-71 “Blackbird” was an advanced, long-range, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft. It was developed as a black project from the Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft in the 1960s by the Lockheed Skunk Works. Clarence “Kelly” Johnson was responsible for many of the design’s innovative concepts. During reconnaissance missions the SR-71 operated at high speeds and altitudes to allow it to outrace threats. If a surface-to-air missile launch was detected, the standard evasive action was simply to accelerate and outrun the missile…

This Blackbird got back — the rare SR-71A known as “Big Tail”  from Travel for Aircraft | The Air Force Armament Museum is located on the outside of Eglin AFB near Valparaiso and Niceville, both in Florida. Displayed on the grounds are several historic aircraft with the most popular likely to be the Lockheed SR-71A “Blackbird” (no official name for SR-71s) standing front and center. All the SR-71 aircraft (also informally known as “Sleds” and “Habus”) were strategic assets and likely all flew historic missions, though most of these flights will remain classified for years to come. This particular Blackbird has a unique trial modification which added 9 feet (2.7m) beyond the tail to carry a new optical bar camera as well as more electronic countermeasures. The testing indicated that aerodynamics were not unduly affected — but the additional equipment did not substantially add to mission capability either. Since the flying of this SR-71 was not harmed the extension remained, this unique aircraft was given the nickname of “Big Tail” and served several more years inhabiting a flight envelope solely with its Blackbird brethren…

“Titanium Goose” walkaround — Lockheed’s rare A-12 “Blackbird” 1st part  from Travel for Aircraft | Who doesn’t know of the Clarence “Kelly” Johnson’s incredibly prescient SR-71 “Blackbird” design which could go faster than Mach 3 and cruise higher than 80,000 feet (~24,000m). Too fast and too high for interception by fighter or missile — this was the Blackbird’s defense as it was flown on reconnaissance missions. But the SR-71 had an immediate ancestor, the A-12, and among the few A-12s (a baker’s dozen) is a rare one — one known as the “Titanium Goose” and it was a trainer with dual pilot cockpits…
