Aviation Center Proposed for Minden-Tahoe Airport

December 15, 2010. Minden, Nevada. In its continued efforts to support sport and recreational flight activity, as well as aviation training, education and tourism, the Minden-Tahoe Airport is pleased to announce the official kick-off of Phase I in the development process of an Aviation Center to be constructed on the east side of the Airport. The proposed facility would have an international component, along with a strong focus on aeronautical education and training, soaring heritage and the growing sport flying industry. This premier facility would house a wide range of interactive exhibits, historical displays and classrooms for a variety of training and educational activities.
“We have a great opportunity to create a world-class soaring, sport aviation, education and training facility that truly reflects the jewel of our area and the wishes of our residents,” said Linda Mae Draper-Hivert, a local pilot, original founder of Soar Minden and Douglas County’s Economic Vitality Champion for the Airport.

The facility (concept attached) would be developed in phases as funding becomes available. Once the facility is completed, it would have an upper level observation area that may also be used for community social functions and gatherings. Because of the Airport’s international recognition for soaring and sport aviation, it is anticipated that visitors and exhibits will reflect a unique and eclectic mix of aircraft displays, interactive exhibits, presentations and community activities.

“We have a lot of work to do to make this vision a reality, but everyone involved is excited about our future potential,” said Bobbi Thompson, Interim Airport Manager. “If you look at the success of our recent activities, including the open house, Aviation Education Day and various soaring events, this type of facility would move us in a really positive direction that reflects the rural character and tourism economy of our community.”

The initial rendering, completed by Eissmann-Pence Architecture of Minden, is a building concept that allows each visitor to enjoy the spacious and open complex and museum or take pleasure in the spectacular scenery of the Carson Valley through the glass walls of the structure. The design exceeds environmental requirements and is intended to be recognized as a premier facility for international tourism.
