Talking point: Red Arrows: Time to go? from www.key.aero
Every so often the popular press in the UK will run stories suggesting that the Royal Air Force's aerobatic display team, the Red Arrows is about to be disbanded to save money… and time after time the idea is rebuffed by the Ministry of Defence.
But, given the dire state of the UK's finances, and recent press speculation that even the Royal Air Force itself may not survive the Strategic Defence Review after the General Election later this year, perhaps doing away with a national institution such as the Red Arrows would highlight the difficult decisions facing the armed forces.
Don't misunderstand us – we're big fans of the Red Arrows – the team has ably demonstrated the professionalism of the Royal Air Force around the world since its inception in 1965 – after all, it...

DARPA calls for an unmanned A-10 -- literally, perhaps from The DEW Line
Since the moment on November 4, 2002, when a Hellfire-armed MQ-1 Predator whacked a car full of terrorists in Yemen, the idea was planted. It wouldn't be long before armed, remotely piloted aircraft would be doing more than striking high value targets. They would be hovering somewhere over a gunfight, backing up the good guys with a laser-guided missile -- in lieu of the A-10's 30mm cannon. It's actually already happening today, with the handful of MQ-9 Reapers sometimes being in the right place at the right time.
But the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is now ...

Gulf Ambition: Dubai Air Show 2009 Preview (#DXB09) - FlightBlogger - Aviation News,
It feels like just yesterday I was arriving in Dubai for my first day of work with Flight. Two years around the horn and I'm back for another go at the Dubai Air Show. Needless to say, the world (and this city) has changed much in the past two years. The 2007 show saw a staggering number of orders as backlogs exploded, pushing Airbus and Boeing towards record bookings.
Late 2007 saw mega orders for Boeing and Airbus by Emirates and DAE, while Bombardier selected the Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan for CSeries, 787 first flight was scheduled for February 2008, United and Delta were in merger talks, 747-8F roll-out had slid and just one A380 had been delivered to Singapore Airlines. ...
