Barnstormers bring high-flying tour to North Iowa - MASON CITY — They all walk — or rather, fly — different paths, but they all have one abiding passion: The sky. "I always wanted to fly a biplane coast to coast," recalled Richard "Speed" Hornbeck, one of several vintage airplane pilots who are part of the American Barnstormers Tour. Within a week of restoring his 1929 Waco Texaco bi-plane, "my buddy and I jumped in, took off for California. It took about a week to get there. "Got there; we had a burger on the beach, turned around and flew right back, which took about another week," he said with chuckle. "It was great." Hornbeck is one of about 20 pilots on the 7-city 2010 tour with their vintage planes. Almost all are from the "golden age" of flight, from 1918 to 1940. The show continues today and Saturday at the Mason City Municipal Airport…

At that times they were proposed to have as much propellers as possible to help carrying those huge flying fortresses into the air, jet propulsion has not been implemented at those times yet. Not much photos were saved since that times, because of the high secrecy levels of such projects and because a lot of time passed already. Still on the photo below you can see one of such planes - a heavy bomber K-7. Now modern history lovers in Russia try to reconstruct according the plans left in once to be top-secret Russian army archives their look in full color. This is one example based on ideas of Russian aviation engineers of that times.

Day 1: American Barnstormers Tour from General Aviation News by Janice Wood - The American Barnstormers Tour, a nostalgic salute to the barnstormers who ventured across America during the 1920s seeking fame and fortune in their biplanes, has made its first stop on a seven-city tour, with 20 restored vintage aircraft from the 1920s and 1930s landing at Mason City Airport (MCW) in Iowa.  Sarah Wilson, who is participating in the tour in her Stearman, is filing reports on the action exclusively for General Aviation News. Here's her first blog: Wind. Each tour has one element that defines it before we arrive and I think for the 2010 Barnstormers Tour it might be wind. On the 2008 tour it was rain. The first stop that year was Iowa City and it had flooded so badly that we had to redirect 18 planes coming from all corners of the country to Ames, Iowa, three days early. Read more...

Aviation Trivia of the Day by JP Santiago | Probably one of the most obscure yet fascinating episodes in the history of jet engine development stemmed from Lockheed's innovative jet-powered L-133 fighter design that was submitted to the USAAF in March 1942. While the fighter design boasted advanced features like a canard and a blended wing-body, the Army Air Forces were more interested in the proposed engines of the L-133 which were to be two axial-flow jet engines designed by Lockheed itself designated L-1000…

Fly4Life Looking For 1,000 Pilots At OSH from AVwebFlash Current Issue
One of the themes of this year's EAA AirVenture is the recognition and promotion of public benefit flying and the call is out to everyone who uses their airplane to help others to stand up and be counted in Oshkosh. EAA and the Air Care Alliance, co-sponsors of Fly4Life, are hoping at least 1,000 volunteer pilots and aircraft owners register at the Fly4Life tents on the south side of Aeroshell Square to get recognition for their own efforts and to promote the cause. "Our focus is to provide an awareness-generating opportunity for you and/or your organization and to recognize the GA community for its positive influence on the lives of others," the groups said in a news release.

Former Cessna CEO Meyer Joins Aviation Hall Of Fame from AVwebFlash Current Issue
For 2009, the National Aviation Hall of Fame will induct astronauts Eileen Collings, the late Edward White and movie legend the late Jimmy Stewart, alongside Russ Meyer, who led Cessna Aircraft as chairman and CEO from 1975 to 2003. Cessna had halted production of its piston-powered aircraft amid liability issues that held the manufacturer responsible for aircraft over its entire life. Meyer is credited with helping pass the 1994 General Aviation Revitalization Act, limiting liability for manufacturers and leading Cessna to re-enter the general aviation market. Today, the company has delivered more than 40,000 Cessna 172s to market, making it the most-produced aircraft model in history. Meyer played a role in the development of the "Be A Pilot" program and went on to oversee expansion of Cessna's Citation line, which holds claim to the title of most popular bizjet line in the world. He also originated the Citation Special Olympics Airlift that organized hundreds of Citation owners in their transport of athletes from around the country to the National Special Olympics games. Winner of two Collier Trophies, Meyer was in 1996 inducted into the Kansas Aviation Hall of Fame and served on three Presidential Commissions. He is a commercial instrument-rated pilot with more than 15,000 hours logged.
