The 500-mph History of America’s Highest-Flying Sport By Jan Tegler | On September 15,
spectators at the 51st National Championship Air Race in Reno, Nevada witnessed a gut-wrenching photo finish. But their thrills were outclassed by the tension Steve Hinton Jr. endured in the cockpit as he went head to head with Bill “Tiger” Destefani, his former mentor. Thousands came to their feet and roared as two of air racing’s fastest, most highly-modified P-51 Mustangs screamed past the home pylon at 500 mph in the closest race at Reno in more than two decades. As the pilots pulled their racers skyward, up and off the race course, neither was sure who had won. Below, the thousands in the stands continued their howled excitement...

FIGHTER TOWN USA, TOP GUN at NAS Miramar · Peter Boschert, Photorecon.net | Top Gun was founded on 03rd March 1969 to train pilots air tactics to encounter the bad results of the fighter pilots in the Vietnam war. For the first time, the so called dissimilar air combat training (DACT) was introduced, in which the American pilots didn’t fight against the similar plane they were flying themselves but against different, often smaller aircraft like they were used by the Soviet Union. The course lasted in the beginning four weeks, later it was extended to five weeks. The crews of the F-4 Phantom II fought at Top Gun against the A-4 Skyhawk (simulating subsonic aircraft) and the F-4E Tiger II, which was simulating supersonic aircraft. The first commander of Top Gun was Ron “Mug” McKeown. The courses were manned mostly by pilots of the “front-line-squadrons”, who should give their knowledge of the course afterwards to their squadrons...

The Best View of 2 Space Shuttles!!!! from How I Am Becoming An Astronaut by Damaris B. Sarria
If all goes according to schedule we should have a unique view at Launch Complex 39 tomorrow morning. Endeavour arrived at Pad B this morning and certain operations will keep the Rotating Service Structure (RSS) retracted (as in the launch configuration) until mid morning. Meanwhile over on Pad A, Atlantis is waiting for the delivery of the Hubble Space Telescope Service Mission (HST SM-4) payload. In preparation for the canister delivery and lift into the Payload Changeout Room (PCR), the Pad A RSS will also be retracted tomorrow morning. So for a few hours tomorrow morning (somewhere between 7:30am – 10:30am) we will have a clear unobstructed view of both vehicles on the pads. The only other time this occurred was nearly 20 years ago, in September of 1990 (see photo above). Columbia (STS-35) was on Pad A and Discovery (STS-41) was on Pad B.
