Red Arrows and Patrouille de France display their female pilots from Unusual Attitude by Kieran Daly
The RAF and Armee de l'Air are of course playing down the significance of this, but to any of us of a certain age it's highly significant - in an entirely good way. Apparently coincidentally, the UK's Red Arrows and France's Patrouille de France are each fielding their first female pilots this year. In an ideal world this wouldn't in fact be of any great significance, but in the real world it's been a huge struggle getting to this stage and you can only salute the ladies involved.

Oprah: "It's Great To Have A Private Jet" from AVwebFlash Current Issue
We can practically hear the cheering in Wichita from here -- Oprah Winfrey said in a speech to the graduating class at Duke University on Sunday that "it's great to have a private jet." With CEOs across the country shamefaced about corporate excess, and aviation workers paying the price in thousands of lost jobs, could Oprah single-handedly make it OK again to fly? "Anyone that tells you that having your own private jet isn't great is lying to you," she told the grads. "That jet thing is really good." Whether her enthusiasm will turn the tide and make private jets fun again is still an open question -- it could make things even worse. While The Wall Street Journal's "Wealth Report" blog found it encouraging --"Perhaps [the private-jet industry] should forget all the boring arguments about jobs and productivity and efficiency and run a picture of Oprah..." -- others were less impressed. According to Perez Hilton's blog, the message was not a positive one: "Lesson to learn, graduates: It's good to be Oprah and sucks to be everyone else!"

Hiller Helicopter concept models from The Unwanted Blog by admin
As a followup to yestedays post, here're the helicopter models on display at the Hiller aerospace museum, back in '04. These two were STORC(Self-ferrying Trans Ocean Rotary-wing Crane) concepts, which were choppers with turbojets at the rotortips. On the ground, one of the rotors could be flipped so that both rotors faced the same way... turning them into wings. This would allow efficient long-distance ferry flight. At the other end, the rotor could be turned back around, restoring the vehicle into a helicopter. This procedure could not be accomplished in flight, only on the ground with the rotors stopped. On the whole this was a pretty spiffy idea, but rotor-tip turbojets tended to have problems (being squished by centrifugal force really doesn't help a mechanism with lots of moving parts).

World War II Veterans to receive free airplane rides this summer from airzoo.org
World War II veterans will have a chance to fly in a N2S-5 Boeing Kaydet, U.S. Navy primary trainer for free this summer, beginning June 24. Flights are courtesy of the Air Zoo and pilot/sponsor Alan Wright. “We, along with Alan, are pleased to be able to “give back” to those who sacrificed to defend our national freedom,” says Bob Ellis, executive director of the Air Zoo. Flights—which will run through August 28—will be offered each Tuesday and Wednesday (weather permitting). Flights will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis and those flying will need to sign a waiver. A maximum of six flights per day will be offered, and veterans must reserve a flight by calling the Air Zoo at 269.382.6555, ext. 121. Veterans who take advantage of the flight will also be able to receive discounted admission to the Air Zoo on the day of their flight. “This program offers a rare opportunity for veterans to experience a flight in an open cockpit aircraft,” says Ellis. As space is very limited, veterans interested in taking a flight are encouraged to call the Air Zoo at 269.382.6555 x 121.
