MORE SURPRISES FROM COSFORD AIR SHOW
With only a few days to go until the West Midlands biggest aviation event the show organisers still have some surprises in store for visitors.
Last week the news broke that we could expect a Jaguar to taxi and now we hear that there will be a flypast from a Royal Air
Force VC10 at the show on Sunday 17th June. The RAF will not be operating the VC10 after 2013 so this is almost the last opportunity to see its appearance in the West Midlands. There are plans to eventually bring one to become a permanent exhibit in the RAF Museum so perhaps the pilot will take the opportunity to size up the Cosford runway ready for the final landing next year. The VC10 first saw operations with the RAF in 1966 and there will be many people delighted to get the opportunity to acknowledge her many years of service before the fleet is finally laid up.
It has already been publicised that the Belgian Air Force will be appearing in the flying display with
their Agusta109 helicopter and today another surprise announcement revealed that the French Air Force will also be appearing with a C160 Transall. The C160 will be on display to the public in the static aircraft area and will be the largest aircraft on the ground.
With the weather promising to be better than last year’s disappointing downpour and plenty of indoor exhibitions and displays, these latest announcements mean that the Cosford Air Show is set to be one of the most exciting shows for several years and is sure to bring in the crowds.

COSFORD TO REPRISE ROYAL FLYPASTS
along the Mall, but on Sunday 17th June at Cosford both will be giving their full display which is sure to wow the crowds.Sadly the flypast for the River Pageant on Saturday had to be cancelled because of the bad weather. However, the planned stars of that flying display – the Swordfish of the Royal Naval Historic Flight and Royal Navy helicopters - are both in the programme for Cosford as well as nearly six hours packed with performances from aircraft old and new.
Among many other current highlights are the famous Blades, the RAF Typhoon, role demonstrations from a pair of Tornados, the RAF Sea King and the Army Air Corps Apache, while Vampire, Meteor, P-51 Mustang and the Great War team aircraft lead the classic line-up.
Like many big events the activity is not only in the air but includes a full programme of ground entertainment and displays. With less than two weeks to go advance ticket sales are on sale on-line and from local outlets at just £20 per person with children under 16 admitted free.

Jaguars at Cosford Air Show
The latest thrill for those with a love of special aircraft is the unique opportunity to see one of the Cosford based Jaguar aircraft taxiing along the runway during the morning. Although these iconic aircraft are no longer in active RAF service they are still used for ground training and the organisers have promised a close up view of some of them. As well as the live taxi several of the aircraft, including some with unusual paint schemes, will be on display with their ground equipment in the static aircraft park.
For those who prefer something more sedate there will be some fascinating flying by the RAF Large Model Aircraft Association. Their beautiful scale models cover aircraft old and new and with the right camera lens could almost be the real thing. The display will last for an hour and is scheduled to take place immediately before the main flying display.
Other highlights of the show include the fabulous Red Arrows and two Tornados performing a role demonstration accompanied by a pyrotechnic display, as well as an appearance by a P-51 Mustang which saw service with the famous Tuskegee airmen in World War II. This year’s Air Show image is of two Gnats which will star in the display and form part of the celebration of 100 years of the Central Flying School. On the ground the special line up of Central Flying School aircraft starts with the Tiger Moth and features training aircraft through the ages.
Other ground entertainment includes military bands, Field Gun displays, interactive exhibits from the Royal Air Force and of course the famous Sunday market and Craft Fair.

The current record of 238 MPH was established in 2004. Smokey Young will make his record breaking flight in the Formula 1 race plane #3. What is truly innovative about this flight is that the record will be broken using fuel derived from bio mass. The previous record, as well as all speed records within this class were set using leaded aviation gasoline. Smokey's record flight will verify the performance charecteristics of clean buring bio fuel and signals our race teams commitment to exploring eco friendly alternatives to the current blends of aviation gasoline. We hope to continue this program by establishing other speed records and through the exclusive use of bio fuel in Smokey's air show performances… Visit Smokey Youngs Website

Group Hopes To Pull "Oldest" P-38 From UK Beach from AVwebFlash Current Issue - Lost during a training mission in 1942, a Lockheed P-38 Lightning was first revealed by shifting sands at Gwynedd, UK, in 2007; now a recovery team aims extract the aircraft, in whole, from its partially submerged spot. The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) began looking after the aircraft when it was discovered three years ago. The aircraft was identified as the Maid of Harlech, which was flown by Second Lieutenant Robert Elliot. The Lieutenant walked away from the crash that eventually saw the aircraft buried, but was reported missing in action three months later while flying in Tunisia. His "Maid" is now thought to be perhaps the oldest surviving P-38 airframe. As such, museums are in discussions with TIGHAR over hosting the aircraft. But removal of the seriously eroded airframe, from its sand-and-seawater home of 68 years, won't be easy…

The Age of Very Light Jets from Wayne Farley's Aviation Blog by Wayne Farley | The age of very-light jets (VLJ) is upon us. You can call them microjets, entry-level jets or very light personal jets; but these aircraft are small, single-pilot operated and designed to seat 4-8 people, with a maximum take-off weight of under 10,000 pounds. They are lighter than what is commonly termed business jets, and can operate into smaller airports with 3000 feet runways. As an aviation professional and an artist, I'm intrigued by these lean, aesthetically crafted machines which sometimes look like they are from another world. With the exception of the Embraer Phenom and the Piper Jet which were already featured, here's a list of VLJs that may show up at your airport one day…

1985: "I'M AN ACKER BACKER" pins are in everyone's trashcans. Labor strife? That's below us. Strikes? That's below us here an Pan Am, too. Usually new labor agreements were hammered out at some local bar down the street from Pan Am's landmark New York City headquarters building. But that changed from 1981. Was it the airline's new chairman, smooth talking Texan C. Edward Acker? Was it the infusion of the employees of National Airlines in 1979? Was it deregulation?...
