Sun ’N Fun–The Day After  by Joe Clark | Havin' Fun and Sun 'N Fun - Okay, this is not officially the day after Sun ’N Fun, but it is for me. Often, I have said I want my 20-year-old body back; each day I live, it becomes more evident I am now well beyond 29 years of age. This morning, after walking all over the airport yesterday, even my pains have pains… But the show was as always, amazing...

"I Survived Sun 'n Fun" T-Shirts For Sale  from AVwebFlash Current Issue  | The Sun 'n Fun tornado last week was certainly a dramatic enough event, and affected enough people, that a T-shirt to commemorate it was inevitable. By Saturday, show-goers were turning up with gray T-shirts that proclaim, "I survived Sun 'n Fun 2011," with a graphic of a spinning tornado tossing tents, airplanes, and various critters into the air. The actual tornado that hit the airport, while it was certainly damaging, was not quite so dramatic as the one on the T-shirt, but for those who were there, it's now officially a t-shirt-worthy event…

Coming Soon: General Aviation in China  from Jetwhine by Robert Mark | Every time I hear someone use the words general aviation and China in the same sentence, I can’t help but think back a few years ago to the early days of the Cessna 162 Skycatcher.  Remember the bombshell announcement, when Cessna told the world the only way they could bring the little bird to market at an affordable price was to let the folks in China build the parts with Cessna re-assembling in the United States? I doubt the sting of the return slap Cessna received from much of the Wichita labor community has been forgotten…

Peterson and Wendover Historic Airfield President Jim Petersen are among those trying to protect the hangar built to house the Enola Gay and Bockscar B-29 Superfortresses, honoring the legacy of the "old boys" who trained here. I started this blog last March to share even just a bit of the enjoyment I get out of my trips through the history of flight and that became the subtitle for Aviation Trivia of the Day- "Short Trips on the Long Road of Aviation History"…

Never Ever Let Your 11 Year Old Prop Your Airplane! by Martt - And I say again, never ever let your 11 year old prop your airplane.  OK, now that I have the disclaimer out of the way, I'll tell you that's me as an 11 year old propping the first Breezy we had back in 1972.  I decided to put these pics up because of the recent flap with the controller's kids relaying instructions to crews of several active airliners back in February.  Here's another thing to be clear on: I'm not saying it was a good idea for the controller to allow his kids to relay instructions, but after careful review of the audio, I'm not gonna say it was a horrible idea either…

Aviation Trivia of the Day by JP Santiago - Although he had his career begin at North American Aviation, Jim Bede's real passion was for light aircraft- more importantly, light aircraft that were within the reach of most Americans at a time when ownership of even a two-seat Cessna or Piper was out of reach for most private pilots. In 1961 Jim Bede formed Bede Aviation to produce the BD-1, a two seat low wing monoplane that would be kit built, something that had never been tried before in the general aviation market. Changes in the business plan at the time pushed him to offer the BD-1 as a fully-built aircraft instead of a kitplane. The new company was called American Aviation but a conflict between Jim Bede and the shareholders resulted in Bede being forced to relinquish leadership of his company. The BD-1 became the AA-1 Yankee with Russ Meyer as its president. Russ Meyer would later go on to become president of Cessna and American Aviation was acquired by Grumman in 1972 and the AA-1 would set the pattern for a series of light planes from the company in the 1970s…

Aviation Trivia of the Day by JP Santiago | The development of the only turboprop fighter to go into production in service was quite checkered, to say the least. The Westland Wyvern underwent three different changes of engine before ending up with the definitive Armstrong-Siddeley 3,667-horsepower Python engine- the first versions used the 24-cylinder Rolls-Royce Eagle engine, then a change to the Rolls-Royce Clyde turboprop before ending up with the Python in the S.4 version of the Wyvern. One of the reasons for the Wyvern's protracted development was that the first prototypes had three new components that test pilots were less than eager to test- a new airframe, a new engine, and a new contra-rotating propeller mechanism…
