The American Air Museum- Duxford, UK from avimuseumzone by WireFox
Whilst not being the Imperial War Museum Duxfords biggest 'fan', I am however a big fan of the
American Air Museum hangar complex on the Duxford site. For a start the aircraft are displayed
in a manner worthy of many awards. David Lee's input in this museum with regard to sorting the weights out of the various aircraft suspended from the ceiling really comes into it's own.
From a visitors point of view its got a 'nice feel' to it in that its for all visitors, like the disabled or
elderly visitor that comes to the hangar, there is 'ramped' access all the way round dropping to
the ground floor on bothsides. The upper ramped tier, has wonderful views of the aircraft on show, weither it is hung up or standing on the ground floor area. Its bright, clean and you do not get the 'feeling' of being 'penned-in'.

Cities From the Sky from www.airspacemag.com
Conducting aerial surveys in the 1920s took an intrepid soul. The airplane's open cockpit—and it was always open—was windy, cold, and frequently wet. The ride could be bumpy, causing the bulky aerial cameras of the day to occasionally plummet over the side. "Pilots and photographers," wrote Anthony Brandt for Air & Space ("Sherman Fairchild Looks at the World," Oct./Nov. 1990), "often complained about the harsh conditions: oxygen deprivation, severe cold, and noise and fumes from the engines all had to be endured." It was an altogether unsatisfactory situation.
So aerial photographer Sherman Mills Fairchild decided he'd build his own airplane.

Where's My Flying Car? Ask DARPA from Ares by Graham Warwick
Hurry and you might just get your bid in for a DARPA contract to demonstrate a flying car. The deadline for proposal submissions is Jan. 14. Before you strap some wings onto your Yugo, you might want to check what DARPA is looking for. Just any old folding-wing flying car won't pass muster - not even the Terrafugia Transition, which is about to fly in proof-of-concept form.
No, DARPA doesn't want a two-seat light sport aircraft that can toddle down the road but needs a runway to take off and land on. It wants a scout/transport vehicle that can carry 2-4 people, drive at speeds up to 60mph, take off and land vertically from unprepared surfaces, and fly for 2 hours at airspeeds up to 150mph. It wants a vehicle that can be driven manually, but flown automatically - "with manual flight control units that can override the fully automatic system". Well it wouldn't be DARPA if it didn't push the envelope a bit....
