Touching History . . . from Aerographs Blog by admin | As a fan of history, it is not often that one has the opportunity to "touch" history. And yet, I had the rare chance to do just that last week, when I photographed several WWII aviation artifacts in a private collection. Having lived through the dark days of WWII, he has since amassed quite a collection of memorabilia, including several items I'd never seen before…

Former Thunderbirds pilot 'an inspiration' for young girls from Air Force Link Top Stories
Perched on a balcony overseeing an assortment of aircraft static displays, a young girl asked Maj. Nicole Malachowski, "Is it hard to be a pilot?"
The major smiled at the question; it's one she'd answered many times. After all, she was the first female Thunderbirds and before that, an accomplished F-15E Strike Eagle pilot.
"Of course it's hard," the major answered. "You have to study, you have to work a lot, you have to stay in shape. You have to be dedicated to it. But when you're up there flying, it all becomes worth it. There is nothing like the combination of grace and power that comes from flying jets."

They were so tactile. So in-touch and unobstructed. These traits still stand among the many strong appeals of the hang gliders and ultralights that started me off in aviation. These traits help keep me on the look-out for opportunities to still fly some of my old favs...when we can make it work, well, we go flying in something of the Lightest Stuff.
In between those too-infrequent opportunities, unfortunately, great memory jogs -- sights and sounds that send my mind's eye back into the air in one of the Lightest Stuff -- seem few and far between. When they come, they're worth savoring -- half out of nostalgia, half for the inspiration to get aloft again. ...

Movie Monday - March 16 - Me-262 1944 Training Film from Flightblogger by Jon Ostrower
This week's Movie Monday is an pretty amazing find. Buried deep on Google Video I found a Luftwaffe training video from 1944 of the Messerschmitt Me-262 - the world's first jet powered aircraft. According to the description on the video:
The original audio is long since gone. However, the replaced narration is that of Franz Steigler, who flew the plane and watched the film during the war.
The film, which is 46 minutes, is an extraordinary piece of primary source material for understanding the revolutionary leap in technology that occurred at the end of World War II. I watched it transfixed on the amazing history found in this video. What unfolds below is really a demonstration of the fragility of the first jet fighter and its clear tendency to overheat. ...

CAF P-82 Saga from Warbirdworld
I was sad to hear that the P-82 Twin-Mustang with the CAF has now started to be dismantled for trucking back to the arms of the USAFM. Pity considering that the CAF did a lot of work on this aircraft but to no avail. If I have my facts right, is this the same aircraft that the CAF wanted to 'trade' for a P-38 Lightning with the P-82 ? Is that way the USAFM put the block on the deal ? If the CAF was thinking that the aircraft belonged to them and were only acting with that in mind, why when the aircraft was either given or loaned, did the USAFM not make this plane and simple to the CAF that they could not trade it or sell it. I have never seen one of these aircraft yet, and would have loved to seen and heard this 'bird' flying at a CAF show.

In search of pie from The PapaGolf Chronicles by DaveG
... As we were headed out to the end or runway 2 for our departure back to Bolton, we counted no fewer than five deer on the inside of the "wildlife control" fence, thus confusing me as to what exactly it is that the fence is supposed to accomplish. All five were far enough away from the runway and ostensibly concerned enough with their own well-being to give the runway a wide berth, though, so they weren't really a factor. As we departed from the airport, I saw a huge-ish cloud of smoke off to the east. Eric was flying at that point, so I had him fly us over for a closer look. As he was flying the plane quite ably enough for me to be comfortable with a momentary distraction, I grabbed the camera and took some pictures. ...

Lawmakers Oppose LASP on Multiple Fronts from AviationBull - Where pilots go to shoot the bull... by Jason
If the TSA had its way this year, all aircraft weighing more than 12,500 pounds would be subjected to airline-level security measures, regardless of how or by whom they are operated, under a proposed rule called the Large Aircraft Security Program (LASP.) Thankfully, it seems that most of congress realizes that this rule is at best extremely flawed. As reported by the AOPA, the House aviation subcommittee sat down with TSA reps and expressed their myriad of concerns with the proposed rule. The meeting generated at least one priceless quote when Rep. Vernon Ehlers (R-Mich.) said, "This is a prime example of a stupid rule...simply put, the threat does not warrant this level of regulation." Thankfully, the aviation subcommittee isn't alone in their opinions. Rep. Bennie G. Thompson, chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security sent a letter to the TSA expressing several important concerns in a very concise manner. AOPA has posted an article summarizing his comments. It seems like dark times for aviation right now with user fees and programs like LASP looming. I'm glad to see that our representatives are seeing through some of the hype and clinging to reason. I hope they hold to that and shoot down these bad ideas before the ideas shoot down GA in America.

One of the greatest engineering challenges in spaceflight is to protect a spacecraft from the searing heat of re-entry, as the fate of the Space Shuttle Columbia so tragically illustrated.

LASP Nets Record Number of Comments to TSA from www.ainonline.com
In what is a record number of comments on a TSA rulemaking, aviation industry proponents flooded the Transportation Security Administration docket for the Large Aircraft Security Program with more than 4,000 comments against the proposal. Joining the effort is a group of seven Congressional representatives, including Sam Graves (R-Mo.) and Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.), who sent a letter to the TSA criticizing the rulemaking. "TSA's rule is procedurally and substantially flawed," the letter noted. "The proposed rule does not: a) contain adequate notice as required by [paragraph] 553 of the Administrative Procedure Act; b) comply with the requirements of the [Act]; c) accurately assess costs and benefits under E.O. 12,866; and d) constitute national rulemaking because it fails to address the statutory factors mandated by Congress or achieve the objectives sought by TSA." There is no Kara Wade! There is only Donna Kohout! from You Fly, Girl
I continue to get most of my hits from people looking for Lt. Kara Wade!
Kara Wade is a fictional character, from the movie Stealth. She's billed as the first woman to fly the Stealth attack plane, the Nighthawk (and was played by Jessica Biel) This is because a mass email seems to be sent out on a periodic basis, purporting to be photos of the naval maneuvers of Valiant Sheild. And one of the photos features "Kara Wade" in the cockpit - and doesn't point out that she's a fictional character.
What I want to know is - why wasn't Donna Kohout - the real first woman to fly the Nighthawk, included instead? (Since she did so, at least two other women have also piloted this plane).
Read my interview with Donna Kohout, at:
