Barnstorming in the Blood - Air & Space Magazine
The best place to watch John Mohr fly his Stearman would have been up against the airshow fence, where I could have heard the crowd’s gasps when the airplane, which had disappeared behind trees, suddenly reappeared in a vertical climb.
Instead, I was taxiing across the ramp because my performance was after his, but I did put on the brakes when an excruciatingly slow roll near the ground caused his engine to quit and flames to shoot out of his exhaust stack and down the side of his fabric fuselage. Aviation Trivia of the Day  by JP Santiago
As the Vietnam War escalated in the 1960s and air crew losses began to mount to increasingly sophisticated air defenses, thoughts began to circulate in the USAF if there was a way to provide downed air crew with a better means of descent than just the winds and parachute. What if downed
aircrew could have a better choice in where to land? And better yet, what if they could fly away to friendly territory? The USAF began to discuss with aircraft manufacturers and designers if there wasn't a way to package an ultralight aircraft or glider into part of the ejection seat and cockpit that would give shot-down air crew more options on bail out. Proposals were issued to the industry in 1967 and Bensen Aircraft Corporation, a well-known builder of homebuilt autogyro aircraft, submitted an unpowered version of one of their autogyros to be used as an autogyro glider. Bensen's proposals easily won the USAF over and contracts were issued in 1968 ...

Team heads to Chile for air show, but not empty-handed from Air Force Link Top Stories
Approximately 30 Airmen and two F-22 Raptors from Holloman Air Force Base headed to Chile to participate in an air show, but took more equipment then initially planned.
The plan had been in effect for months for the Airmen and aircraft to support the 2010 FIDAE Air and Trade Show that would mark the debut of the F-22 to South America; however, after a magnitude 8.8 earthquake hit the country only weeks before the show and damaging thousands of homes, Airmen deploying knew they could not leave the base empty-handed. ...

Jimmy Franklin and the Jet Waco from Pilotbug
Back on the early 2000's these pictures were taken at the Sussex Airshow in Wantage Township, NJ.  Franklin's show was spectacular to see anywhere, but I think he took particular joy flying at such a small venue.  He also liked to take full advantage of the  sloping terrain to create breath-taking sight-lines in which he appeared to be flying so low he was going to impact the ground.  He was an unbelievable showman and innovator. His tragic loss in 2005, along with friend and fellow performer Bobby Younkin, was heartbreaking. ...

CoolPix - Modern Military: The Grissom Air Museum B-58 Hustler by Martt
Here's a second CoolPix already this week featuring Convair's awesome Mach 2 bomber!
There are only 8 B-58 Hustlers still in existence today, and the oldest one happens to be sitting outside just an hour down the road from me.  It's at the Grissom Air Museum which is on the old Grissom Air Force Base in Peru, Indiana.  The facility used to be called Bunker Hill AFB but was renamed Grissom in 1968 after Indiana native Virgil (Gus) Grissom perished in the Apollo 1 launchpad fire.  Today the base is known as the Grissom Air Reserve Base in conjunction with the Grissom Aeroplex.
The museum has a small building with several interesting artifacts, but the bulk of the displays are the airplanes sitting outside.  It's quite a collection actually, including a B-47, B-17, B-25, KC-97, C-119, F-102, F-14 along with many others… and of course the B-58 shown in this picture that I took last Saturday.  As it sits, this is a TB-58A, the modified trainer version.  As the 4th airplane to come off the production line in Fort Worth, Texas, #55-663 was originally designated as a YB/RB-58A, one of the 11 pre-production aircraft.  116 Hustlers were built with the first one going into active service in 1960.  Interestingly, by early 1970, the B-58 was already being retired.  A lot of factors contributed to the relatively short service life of the airplane… I'll get into that in another post.

Family of first F-86 pilot to shoot down MiG-15 during Korean War donates items from National Museum of the USAF Top Stories
The family of Lt. Col. Bruce Hinton, the first F-86 pilot to score a MiG-15 kill during the Korean War, donated several items to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.
On Dec. 17, 1950, Hinton, who was commander of the 336th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, 4th Fighter Interceptor Wing, led a flight of four F-86s over northwestern North Korea. To trick the communists, the Sabre pilots flew at the same altitude and speed as F-80s typically did on missions, and they used F-80 call signs. Hinton spotted four MiGs at a lower altitude, and he led his flight in an attack. After pouring a burst of machine gun fire into one of the MiGs, it went down in flames. In April 1951 Hinton shot down a second MiG-15. ...

Women Pilots' Record: 310 First Flights from AVwebFlash Current Issue
Organizers of the Centennial of Women Pilots, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first pilot certificate awarded to a woman, set a record this month by introducing 310 girls and women around the world, ages 2 to 70, to their first flight in a general aviation aircraft. The flights took place in eight countries on three continents, in 20 different kinds of aircraft, including balloons, gliders, ultralights, airplanes and helicopters, during the week of March 6 to 12. The group now plans to extend the effort for the rest of this year, with the goal to introduce 2,010 girls and women to aviation in 2010. In the last 100 years, the percentage of women who are doctors and lawyers has increased significantly, noted Mireille Goyer, a Canadian pilot who is spearheading the challenge. "Our goal is to grow the women pilots' population to at least [a comparable] level within the next 100 years," she said.

Flights and Fancy: It Started off Bad and Went Downhill - Air and Space Magazine
On November 30, 1955, I was scheduled for a critical flight in the basic phase of Navy flight training—the Phase C check ride—at North Whiting Field, near Pensacola, Florida. Check ride instructors had reputations ranging from somewhat easy to an almost certain "down"—a washout.
With luck, I had made it through previous check rides, so I studied hard and got to the hangar early. On the scheduling board was my name, the name of my instructor—one of the easy ones—and the assigned airplane.
The instructor briefed me on what he expected. He suggested that I preflight the North American SNJ and he would meet me at the airplane.
I took our parachutes out to the airplane and began the inspection. When the instructor arrived he asked how it was going. "Fine, so far," I said. ...

The end of March also marks the end of the Nimrod MR2 in RAF service – leaving the air force with a capability gap. The first Nimrod MRA4 will not enter service until mid-2010.
The Defense Ministry, in December, announced it would withdraw the MR2 ahead of schedule, with the decision having been portrayed as a cost savings measure. The future of the type was thrown into sharp relief following the loss of all 14 personnel and an aircraft over Afghanistan - most likely as a result of the combination of a fuel leak and an onboard fire in 2006. ...

European Airshow Convention 2010 : improving airshows from Sky-Lens'Aviation'. News
There are several tactics to attract visitors in airshows and raise their interest in the many different aerial and festive activities an event can provide. That's what the Convention is all about : inventing the future of these shows, a hard job mixing air safety experience with specialists, marketing, sponsorship, and a bit of creativity to get people in and have them come back the year after. It explains why public care became a main topic for this year's EAC forum, and most airshow organisers are rather more interested in those matters than they used to. There has been ongoing reduced military airplanes participation in airshows during the last ten years, but public attendance kept going up during the same period. Though Display Safety issues are always one of the EAC's core interests, new topics appeared in 2010 such as crisis management with big crowds. The 2010 EAC Convention also centered on another theme that - to my own opinion - is the most important thing to do in airshows : making emotion.

Remembering the "Aztec Eagles" from National Museum of the USAF Top Stories (USAF Photo)
In a dedication ceremony held Feb. 26, 2010, the museum revealed their newest feature, "The Mexican Air Force." This exhibit is dedicated to Mexico's Escuadrón 201, commonly referred to as the Aztec Eagles, which fought alongside the United States forces during World War II. It is part of the growing display of "Airmen in a World at War" exhibit located in the Air Power Gallery.
It is a little known fact that Mexico, which declared war against Japan, Germany and Italy on May 28, 1942, fought alongside the United States in the South Pacific during World War II. The President of Mexico, Manuel Avila Camacho, accepted a U.S. invitation to provide Mexican air force units in the war against Japan after breaking off diplomatic relations with those countries shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.  more...

Flying Fortress flies in, brings history to life (Video and Photos) from Diamond Pilots
The 25th mission Bill Archer flew as co-pilot of a B-17 "Flying Fortress" also became his last. Archer and members of the 447th Bombardier Group were en route to Mainz, Germany, in 1944. The airplane lost two of its four engines. Then a third went out. "It was hard enough to fly on two engines but one was impossible," said Archer, whose daughter, Susan Chiarito, is a Vicksburg physician. "We had one engine left and 300 miles to go." The plane lost altitude steadily. A pair of P-38s accompanied the injured craft to fend off any attackers. The normal flight level for such bombers was about 24,000 feet, but Archer's plane was nearing 2,000 feet. At that level, there was barely enough time to jump and allow a parachute to open.  ...
