Amelia Earhart was born today!

Lindbergh from the Warbird's blog
My father sailed to America in May 1927, and for the rest of his life he told how the Spirit of St. Louis flew low over the steamship one day while the captain sounded the latitude and longitude on the ship's whistle. True or not, the story is one that I savor as proof of the moment's significance. Merely to have been on the North Atlantic that afternoon, sharing it with Charles Lindbergh, was an honor worth telling for half a century.

So I went out there this morning on a flight and I’m sitting there, circling right next to the ‘lady’. It was surreal and I had to pinch myself. I came here thinking ‘Hey, I’m gonna be all business’. But today I found myself looking out the window having to pinch myself and saying ‘Hey, you have a job to do this weekend’. "Pressure" on FAA to Approve UAV Operations in Civilian Airspace from AviationBull
AviationBull has been covering developments in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) issues for some time. The operational and economic benefits offered by UAVs are enormous - they can fly longer and cheaper than equivalent manned aircraft in most cases. Most importantly, they can operate in dangerous conditions that would otherwise put a pilot at risk.
Though these benefits are great, there is one key fact preventing UAVs from flooding our skies: Right now, UAVs are completely incapable of operating safely in the same airspace as manned aircraft. ...

Andrew loves planes, definitely more than fishing. Some of his aviation artwork is on display in the gift shop of the museum. The ladies know him by name and they have a good relationship. We go to the Open House twice a year (Memorial Day and Vete ...

Manila Moments from www.aroundthepattern.com
... For those of you not familiar with the name, or his history, I'll digress for a moment. Leo was a mechanic on B-52s in the early 1960s, based at Travis AFB in northern California. He heard that an air race was going to be held nearby, so he took some military leave and went up to Reno to watch the first running of the Reno Air Races (held in 1964). He got so enthused about flying that he decided to get his license. He got out of the military and went home to New England and started flying. In 1966 he was hired by American Airlines and continued working with them until his untimely death in 1997. He flew aerobatic competitions in a highly modified Steven's Acro that he bought in 1970 and modified to such an extent that he renamed a "Laser 200″. Leo Loudenslager went on to win the U.S. National Championship Aerobatic title a record seven times and, in 1980, also won the World Aerobatic Championship. ...

Shuttle-Riding Bat Dies The Most Glorious Death Imaginable [Space Eulogies]
from Gizmodo by John Herrman
Partial extract:
Bereft of his ability to fly and with nowhere to go, a courageous bat climbed aboard our Discovery with stars in his weak little eyes. The launch commenced, and Spacebat trembled as his frail mammalian body was gently pushed skyward. For the last time, he felt the primal joy of flight; for the first, the indescribable feeling of ascending toward his dream—a place far away from piercing screeches and crowded caves, stretching forever into fathomless blackness. Whether he was consumed in the exhaust flames or frozen solid in the stratosphere is of no concern to us. We know that Spacebat died, but his dream will live on in all of us.
