Eric “Digger” Dowling, flies west at 92 from DailyAviator by Dennis Collins
Mr. Dowling was shot down in a Wellington bomber over Germany in April 1942. He joined with the “Tally-ho” boys led by Roger “Big X” Bushell at Stalag Luft III in an adventure that would come to be called the “Great Escape”. His role was loosely cloned by Charles Bronson, as the man who dug in sweating, oxygen starved holes that went so deep the Germans couldn’t find them. He hated the movie, because it didn’t show the real difficulties he faced. And because Bronson’s character got out, while he was fated to loose an opportunity to get out because of the luck of rolled dice left him off the list. It probably saved his life, as 50 of the escapees were murdered by the Germans in violation of the Geneva convention. Full Story at the
DailyMail.

It’s a little unclear whether this is *the* last shot from the Kitty Hawk, but it is for this FA-18 from Carrier Air Wing 5 that will be transferred to the USS George Washington.
