Connecticut STEM teacher to be honored with 2014 Crossfield Aerospace Educator of the Year Award   Rachael Manzer to receive $5,000 check at the National Aviation Hall of Fame 52nd Annual Enshrinement Ceremony on October 4th in Dayton (Dayton, Ohio – August 22, 2014)  The National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) announced today that the 2014 A. Scott Crossfield Aerospace Educator of the Year Award will be presented to Rachael Manzer, the STEM coach at the Annie Fisher STEM Magnet School in East Hartford, Connecticut.   Ms. Manzer will receive the award, including a $5,000 cash stipend, as part of the 52nd Anniversary NAHF Enshrinement Dinner & Ceremony held at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton on Saturday, October 4, 2014. Ms. Manzer teaches and models inquiry-based science lessons for K-12 classroom and is a "Teachers in Space" Pathfinder Astronaut Candidate, one of seven teachers selected from across the nation to fly on a suborbital space flight under NASA's Network of Educator Astronaut Teachers program. The NAHF will provide Ms. Manzer and her guest an expenses-paid trip to Dayton where she will be presented her award at the NAHF's annual black-tie enshrinement gala, widely known as America's "Oscar Night of Aviation."   The event also features the formal induction of the six individuals in the NAHF Class of 2014, witnessed by a who's who of the air and space community including industry leaders and sponsors, former enshrinees, public officials and aviation buffs from across the U.S.  Nearly 700 are expected to attend. Crossfield Award jury members lauded Ms. Manzer's efforts to promote practical learning, including raising funds and leading her school community through two microgravity experiment design competitions, resulting in an experiment flying on STS-135 – the final flight of Space Shuttle Atlantis and of the U.S. Space Shuttle program.  She also led a group of students and families to witness the STS-135 launch.  A second student experiment later flew aboard the unmanned SpaceX Dragon on its maiden flight to the International Space Station. The Crossfield Award is named in honor of its founder, A. Scott Crossfield (1921-2006), who was inducted into the NAHF in 1983 in recognition of his contributions as a naval aviator, aerospace engineer and test pilot. He was the first man to successfully fly at speed above Mach 2 and Mach 3, the first to fly the X-15, and he contributed to the safety of manned spaceflight.  Crossfield had a lifelong respect for the dedicated educators who had helped him along his path. He personally founded the award in 1986 as a tangible way to recognize teachers of today that effectively use aerospace education as a way to foster the development of their young students. Los Angeles County Air Show Announces the Red Bull Air Force Will Rock the Antelope Valley

For Christmas procrastinators discount holiday ticket promotion launched today

LOS ANGELES (December 19, 2013) - The Los Angeles County Air Show today announced the addition of the Red Bull Air Force to its exciting performer line up along with a Christmas ticket promotion for last-minute gift-giving procrastinators. Tickets will be discounted online by 20 percent through December 25th at midnight (PDT).

The Show, scheduled for March 21-22, 2014, at William J. Fox Airport, will showcase thrill-seeking performances from the Red Bull Air Force including former two time Red Bull Air Race World Champion and five time U.S. National Aerobatic Champion, Kirby Chambliss, the Red Bull Air Force wing suit flyers, and Chuck ‘Malibu’ Aaron, known as a methodical risk taker and the first civilian ever to be licensed to perform helicopter aerobatics in the U.S. Aaron has also been inducted into the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and is recognized officially as a Living Legend of Aviation.

As part of the Red Bull performance, Kirby Chambliss will fly one of his explosive aerobatic routines in conjunction with the wingsuit flyers creating an aviation circus-like performance in the sky by some of the world’s top extreme athletes.

The Air Show will feature several of the top air show performers from around the country including the headlining act, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, high-energy aerobatics, barnstorming, and various warbirds. The Show will also focus on the innovative aircraft whose roots are tied to the Antelope Valley. On the ground, spectators will be able to explore static aircraft displays, interact with pilots and crewmembers, and experience interactive attractions and educational exhibits designed to promote STEM. California Capital Airshow and Aerojet Rocketdyne Launch the Next Generation to New Heights

Brand new attraction designed to reach teens early by showcasing the cool aspects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and the world of opportunities that awaits them

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – September 25, 2013 - The California Capital Airshow (CCA), presented by Sacramento County, today announced the debut of Aerojet Rocketdyne’s Space and Aviation LaunchPad at this year’s Airshow, October 5th and 6th at Mather Airport. LaunchPad is a dynamic and interactive science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) enrichment exhibit targeted to teens that promotes opportunities in STEM-related fields as they consider collegiate and career choices.

A progressive collaboration between the CCA and Aerojet Rocketdyne, the 15,000 square foot pavilion will allow students and their parents the opportunity to enjoy a hands-on educational experience designed to spark the interest of young adults and their involvement with STEM while helping to provide the aerospace industry with a new generation of professionals.

The Nation is facing a shortage of skilled workers in STEM-related employment fields and is expected to have more than 8.6 million of these jobs in 2018 with as many as three million unfilled.

“There is a growing need in our industry for candidates who are educated and experienced in STEM-based fields,” said Warren M. Boley, Jr., president of Aerojet Rocketdyne, one of the region’s largest employers.  “A recent survey by the U.S. Department of Commerce indicated that only 33 percent of eighth graders are interested in STEM majors and only 6 percent of high school seniors will get a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field. Aerojet Rocketdyne wants to be an active participant in changing that trend by taking every opportunity we can, as a company, to inspire and stimulate interest at every age.”

LaunchPad seeks to combine students’ love of games and technology with real world application.  Filled with aircraft, space artifacts, robots and an aerospace theater, guests can watch demonstrations, participate in games and experience first-hand the clear relationship between the aerospace industry and STEM studies.   On display will be the NASA Mars Exploration Rover "Opportunity" full-scale model. The Opportunity Rover will celebrate its 10th year of exploration on Mars this coming January 2014, with many events planned by NASA to recognize this fact. Attendees will also have the opportunity to rub shoulders with men and women who have used their education to change the world.  A 60-minute Flight Experience where you will learn what skills are required to obtain a pilot’s license and the opportunity for actual flying time in a simulator is part of the exciting exhibit.

Volunteer counselors, local youth organizations and academic institutions will be available to help interested attendees understand how they can continue their interest in STEM education, including creating a school-to-career blueprint and information on how to join and pursue STEM-related fun and interesting activities long after the show.

University to Provide Exclusive Academic Support for Higher Education, STEM Programs

OSHKOSH, WI -- Aug. 1, 2013 –  Today at EAA AirVenture air show in Oshkosh, the world’s leader in aerospace and aviation higher education Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Kiddie Hawk Air Academy (KHAA), a nonprofit dedicated to sparking a love of aviation in children, announced an exclusive partnership to lead educational and STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) programs for the next generation.

Emceed by air show announcer “Sky Talker” Danny Clisham, the joint announcement took place Thursday morning at the Kiddie Hawk/Living Legends of Aviation display in KidVenture at Oshkosh. It featured Embry-Riddle’s Prescott, Ariz., Campus Chancellor Dr. Frank Ayers, one of the newest Living Legends of Aviation and only FAA-certified acrobatic helicopter pilot in the Americas Chuck Aaron and longtime Living Legend and founder of Fantasy of Flight in Polk City, Fla., Kermit Weeks. Earlier in the week, KHAA received the AirVenture Oshkosh 2013 Service Award.

Kiddie Hawk organizers and special guests travel around the country to air shows, schools, hospitals and other events to educate children ages 4 to 9 about the world of aviation. The partnership with the university expands this outreach via programs within the university’s STEM Academy, summer camp opportunities for school-age children, and university and KHAA volunteers and staff coordinating as mentors.

KHAA produces its annual fundraiser the “Living Legends of Aviation” Awards gala each January in Beverly Hills, Calif. The Living Legends are defined as aviation entrepreneurs, innovators, record breakers, industry leaders, astronauts, pilots who have become celebrities and celebrities who have become pilots. Two recent recipients of this year’s award were astronauts Neil Armstrong (Carol Armstrong accepted) and Gene Cernan. As the Living Legends “Official Ambassador of Aviation,” pilot/actor John Travolta will host the 2014 event.
