2010 National Aviation Hall of Fame Enshrinement Class - Alan Bean

Only a handful of men have walked on the moon. But thanks to Alan Bean’s artistic eye – and firsthand memories – we can all get closer to living that experience. Alan Bean was born in Wheeler, TX on March 15, 1922. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1955 and was commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy. After completing flight training he was assigned to a jet attach squadron in Jacksonville, FL. After a four-year tour of duty, he attended the Navy Test Pilot School – where one of his instructors was his future Apollo 12 commander, Pete Conrad.

We has selected in 1963 as part of NASA’s third group of astronauts. After serving on the backup crews for Gemini 10 and Apollo 9, Bean was selected as the lunar module pilot for Apollo 12, the second lunar landing.

After the successful Apollo 12 mission, Bean’s final mission in space was as commander of Skylab 3 in 1973. He now lives in Houston and devotes himself to his paintings and other works of art that feature his experiences in space.

For more of Alan Bean’s story, as well as the other members of this year’s Hall of Fame class, join us Saturday night at 7:00pm EDT for the LIVE Internet broadcast of the entire Hall of Fame Enshrinement event. Click here.

Best of day 20: Scud running to Georgetown from Flying Across America | Weather was much better today than yesterday. We departed Big Spring shortly after 8am. There were some low clouds around but enough clear sky to climb on top. There are windmills in this area and we kept an eye on them while climbing. We cruised on top for forty minutes, with a great tailwind. We did hit the 90 knots mark on the GPS a couple of times. This did not last for the whole flight to Brady - our fuel stop between Big Spring and Georgetown. There was a layer of clouds at our altitude and it was not sure that we could find a hole to descend later if we were getting on top. It was time for some scud running…

C-17 aircrew scores touchdown in mission with NFL greats via AF.mil Top Stories
The quarterback was crouched in his uniform, scanning the field from under his helmet for his intended receivers. But this was no stadium; it was a C-17 Globemaster III flying over the harsh and dangerous terrain that is Afghanistan. And there was no football, but rather 18 much-needed bundles of food, water and supplies for troops at a forward operating base. The quarterback, in this case a loadmaster, found his targets. Touchdown! ...

I can't even tell you what the aircraft parked behind it are as we were so enthralled with the 35 that we never made it back there (at least I didn't). Heck I didn't even take a single pic of the F-22 that was parked right on the other side of the F-35. Also in this hangar was a Globalhawk UAV. ...

The landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson has been dissected from many angles and now one EAA member has created what is likely the most complete and visually impactful animated reconstruction of the event to date.

Using their Exosphere3D software, Osterbuhr initially set out to create a reconstruction to use as a marketing vehicle; however after investing 200 hours his curiosity continued to drive him to refine the project into deeper and deeper detail. ...

Max Haynes does it again with a beautiful photo essay of a Grumman Albatross. If you are a fan of the Grumman seaplanes this is a must see! A picture is worth a thousand questions via FlightBlogger
For those of you who have paid a visit to the Future of Flight museum at Paine Field in Everett, Washington, this large monolithic composite barrel will be quite familiar to you. A few weeks ago, Boeing removed three barrel - a demonstrator of 787 section 47 - from its exhibit in at the museum and relocated back to the factory grounds. It's been rigged up near the 40-41 building and appears to have a vertical stabilizer leading edge now attached to the top of it. I confess to having absolutely no earthly clue as to the purpose of this barrel's reclamation, but it does inspire many many questions? Can anyone shed some light?
