Aviation Trivia of the Day by JP Santiago - From yesterday's Taylor Aerocar to today's Terrafugia, designers and engineers have always dreamed of ways to combining the speed and convenience of flight with the ease and familiarity of automobile travel. Nearly all of the designs that have reached flight hardware status have involved custom-built cars combined with custom-built wings and empennages for flight. But one aeronautical engineer in 1968 dared to think differently and went with an off-the-shelf solution for both components that he was sure would make the flying car practical…

This Week In Military/Aviation History 24-30 May from Warbirds Online by Tom Kwiatkowski Sr. | Hello Folks. Another quick seven has blown by me and here I am again. I hope you had a good week. The weather for this week looks great, mostly in the 80s. Wow! A short month ago I was glad it was in the 60s. I don't think I'll complain too much about the heat. The older I've gotten the more I detest being cold. I'd rather be sweating my butt off than shivering. Don't get me started about snow shoveling either. Oh well, what say we start our weekly stroll down History Lane, shall we? Yes, I think we shall. Tom K.

Video: Hypersonic X-51A Waverider - Make Go Fast! by Martt - A pretty big deal of a test flight is scheduled to take place in just a couple days, on Tuesday May 25, 2010, as the Boeing X-51A Waverider unmanned hypersonic test aircraft will be dropped from a B-52 at 50,000 feet over the Pacific Ocean to hopefully show true viability for air breathing scramjet (supersonic combustion ramjet) power. On the flight, the X-51A will initially be powered by a solid rocket booster up to about Mach 4.5 when the scramjet will be lit and accelerate the vehicle up to around Mach 6. The video above does a great job of explaining the program details…
Air Force Sets Date To Fly Mach-6 Scramjet from Slashdot by timothy | coondoggie writes "The US Air Force said it was looking to launch its 14-foot long X-51A Waverider on its first hypersonic flight test attempt May 25. The unmanned X-51A is expected to fly autonomously for five minutes, after being released from a B-52 Stratofortress off the southern coast of California. The Waverider is powered by a supersonic combustion scramjet engine, and will accelerate to about Mach 6 as it climbs to nearly 70,000 feet. Once flying, the X-51 will transmit vast amounts of data to ground stations about the flight, then splash down into the Pacific. There are no plans to recover the flight test vehicle, one of four built, the Air Force stated."

Wierd and wonderful - flying testbeds from Things with Wings by Guy Norris | Following my flight in Honeywell's 757 flying testbed, I thought it would be interesting to post a few images of other, earlier aircraft in this role.
