The Humble Birth of Grumman Aircraft from Aviation Trivia of the Day
In October 1920, the head of the Loening Company, Grover Loening, had been supervising the construction of a two-seat naval floatplane at two locations- at Loening's own plant at 31st Street on the East River in mid-town Manhattan and at the Naval Aircraft Factory in Philadelphia. It was in Philadelphia that Loening convinced one of the Navy's test pilots to resign his commission and join his company. That young 25-year old naval lieutenant was Leroy Grumman. The young Grumman rose quickly to the top ranks of  ...

Guest commentary: Mystery solved: The Bear Island Airplane Camp - Naples News
Last Sunday’s article and photos brought forward many stories. Some of the calls to me from readers told of heartfelt experiences; one told of sorrow and pain.
One caller said he had heard this story while camped out at Bear Island when a teen. He was told the airplane, in World War II, was on a practice bombing mission in the "Holey Land" bombing range between Fort Lauderdale and Immokalee, north of what is now Alligator Alley and the Collier-Broward line. It was named for the craters left by the bombs and other explosive munitions.
The story goes on to tell that after the bombs were dropped, the aircraft experienced mechanical trouble, the crew bailed out and it crashed into the swamp.
One caller, Billy Ferguson, stated he had been in the airplane camp, and it was laid out as described and looked the same as the photos. ...

100 Years of US Air Shows- Maxwell AFB Celebrates 100 Years of Flight from Alabama Aviator - Aviation News
Nearly 100 years ago the first US Air Show took place on the west coast sparking an airplane passion that spread rapidly across America. The first "official" Aviation Meet held January 10-20, 1910 was in Los Angeles. Only six years after the Wright Brothers Kitty Hawk flight, aerial exhibitions thrilled thousands of spectators. By the end of 1910, air shows, air races and aviation exhibitions began the evolution into the air show industry that entertains millions of fans today.
During this formative time of aviation, innovators and pioneers were born, as were the performers. This was the time, not only of the Wright Brothers, Glenn Curtis and Harriet Quimby, but of those pilots who would become the first world record holders in aviation. Infrastructure of current airshow productions were born on horse racing tracks and fairgrounds; producing grandstands, sound systems, advertising and excitement.  ...

Delton grounds air show - Dells Events
Monday, the Delton Town Board postponed approving a license for this year's Baraboo Dells Airshow because a resident complained that his land was trespassed upon and his soybean crop damaged during preparations for last year's show.
"I suggest that you deny the permit," said Delton resident Warren Trager. "Last year they came on our property without permission and put a snow fence on the soybean crops."
The show's organizer, Paul Rogers, didn't attend the meeting, but spoke with the Dells Events in a phone interview. He said it was an Federal Aviation Administration requirement that the air space in which pilots perform be marked with visuals on the ground. The snow fence, which was laid flat on top of the field, served that function. ...

Controller Kudos from Jetwhine
OK, I have to admit that occasionally Scott and I say a few things that upset folks, but only to pilots and air traffic controllers. Almost everyone else is safe … for now.
But along with the ability to lob criticism on people and topics that we believe sometimes need a good swift kick in the pants, there comes a time to acknowledge the roles some of those same aviation professionals play when they go above and beyond. Such is today, now that the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) last night awarded a number of U.S. controllers the Archie League Medals of Safety at the association's 6th annual ceremony in Orlando.
Controllers call these above and beyond events "saves," as in an almost guaranteed loss of life had they not been their to help. NATCA explains the way controllers are measured for the award this way. ...

Chickasaw Kids Go Flying from AVwebFlash Current Issue
Chickasaw Nation Aviation and Space Academy offers a five-day summer camp that this year doubled in size. Some 82 students signed on for the five-day experience that put each one of them in the pilot seat of a Diamond DA-40, thanks to US Flight Academy in Denton, Texas. The children ranged in age from 10 to 18 and spent one of their five days at the academy taking ground school, visiting the control tower and going for rides. "There's no substitute for the real thing," said US Flight Academy's Mark Taylor, who acted as event coordinator. "When these kits take their first ride in an aircraft, their eyes light up like the sun," he said. The camp brings children together from all over the Midwest. Through the program they gain exposure to everything from model rocketry to the basics of space medicine.

Parajet SkyCar flying vehicle evolves, now ready for pre-orders from Engadget by Darren Murph
The historians once pontificated that we'd all be cruising about in flying cars right around the year 2000, and while that whole Y2K fiasco threw us a tad behind schedule, it looks like the future may actually still be upon us. Parajet, the same company responsible for that downright unnerving
personal flying machine we peeked back in '05, has now placed its long-awaited SkyCar up for pre-order. Said vehicle has evolved quite dramatically over the years, but now that dollars (er, pounds) are being dropped on it, we have to assume that the design is near final. The vehicle is completely street legal and can accelerate to 62mph in just 4.2 seconds, thus making it the world's first "usable, road-legal flying car." If you're champing at the bit to be the first on your block with one, you can drop £10,000 ($16,381) now and pay the remaining £50,000 ($81,905) just before it ships in "late 2010." Of course, we're not making any promises about it actually shipping, but that's a risk you'll have to take.
