Memphis Belle B-17 on area educational mission - Meadville Tribune | ERIE — Poof! Out billows black and gray smoke and building, building, faster and faster the air fills with “wha-wha-wha-wha-wha!” repeated three more times over. The beast is alive and woe be to those inside and below. It creaks, cracks, squeaks, jiggles and wiggles. Touch its thin metal skin and you feel its heart beat. It shakes you to the bone. Slowly, slowly, slowly it begins to lumber. Oil leaks out and its olive drab paint glistens menacingly under the sun. With a roar and then huge buzz like a giant angry wasp, the 4,800 horsepower of its four small-car-sized engines defy gravity. This is the moment of no going back. After this, lives will change — good odds it will be yours — in blast, fire, blood...

Shoestring Pilot Report from airbum.com via AAFO
The original Shoestring was designed by Rod Kriemendahl and was built in Van Nuys, California, by Carl and Vince Ast, with the help of anyone willing to wield a wrench. Shoestring is a fairly big airplane, for a Formula One. Its 19-foot wing has an aspect ratio of over five, which is one reason it can keep ahead of the slightly smaller Rivets in the high, thin air of Reno. All Formula One racers are required to have a minimum of 66 square feet of wing area, but most of them have used a short, wide wing to get the area. Rivets and Shoestring stand alone with their tapered, longish wings. Apparently, the better overall efficiency of the higher aspect ratio wings is well worth the slight increase in drag because these two airplanes consistently bring home all the trophies.
