What It’s Like to Jump Out of a Perfectly Good Plane With the US Army Golden Knights
from onemansblog.com
Have you ever heard of the US Army Golden Knights? Before you answer that question, think carefully! Because if you’ve ever watched an Army / Navy football game, or seen the Indy 500, or basically any other major event where Army parachutists dramatically land in the center of the action then you have seen the Golden Knights!
Well, not only did I get the chance to spend a few days with the Golden Knights, I also had the extreme privilege of going on a tandem jump with Sergeant Jon Ewald while Sergeant Joe Abeln took care of videography duty documenting my first ever jump. Michael Battise, the battalion’s resident multimedia expert assembled the following edit of clips from Joe’s footage. I’ve also got some additional footage that I’ll be working on another edit with later so stay tuned for a different take entirely. ....

Angel Flight Lands in Alabama Video from Alabama Aviator - Aviation News
TUSCALOOSA AL - Achieving lofty goals, such as the desire to fly, seldom comes easy; sharing that passion leads many pilots to do great deeds. Among these is flying medical patients for Angel Flight. Dozens of Alabama pilots volunteer their aviator skills, aircraft and time to fly those in need of medical treatment to distant locations free. Until recently these flights were coordinated by Birmingham based GivingFlite as well as sister organization, Angel Flight. This year GivingFlite merged with Georgia based Angel Flight therefore furthering possibilities for Alabama pilots to volunteer their skill.  ...

Hangar Tales - June 2010 - from Another Time
Last weekend I spent Saturday morning at the hangar.  Upon arrival at the airport I stopped to visit with Doug, Ross and another wingman before they launched off to a fly-in in their RV-6s.  They were excited that I was going to join their formation flight as the slot.  WHAT?  My 170 keeping up with their RVs?  They laughed and all I could think about was them calling me Capt. Slow in my Cessna!  I am not sure I want to be like Capt. Slow from Top Gear so I let them go as a three ship. ...

May 6 from Cut and Paste Aviation
... 1937 -- The Hindenburg, the famous German dirigible, is destroyed by fire and an explosion of an unknown origin during landing proceedings at NAS Lakehurst, New Jersey. 36 people lost their lives.
803 feet long, more than that of three 747s, the hydrogen-filled LZ 129 Hindenburg rigid airship began its journey across the Atlantic in Frankfurt, Germany on May 3rd. Headwinds enroute and then poor conditions in the Lakehurst area delay the arrival more than 12 hours, finally approaching to moor just after 7:00 p.m. While ground crews attempt to secure the airship, flames are spotted just forward of the vertical fin. The fire spreads very quickly, engulfing the entire airship in less than a minute, crashing it to the ground in a massive fireball. Though the exact cause is uncertain, a sudden wind change from east to southwest meant a late S-turn correction needed to be made in the final minutes of flight. This may have caused strain on the aircraft, snapping a support line and ripping open a gas cell, sparking the fire from the leaking hydrogen. ...

Adilson Kindlemann's Red Bull Crash Escape from AVwebFlash Current Issue
Adilson Kindlemann's crash during a Red Bull Air Race practice session in Perth, Thursday, was the first in the race's history, but not the first time Kindlemann (or other racers) had found himself upside down strapped to a chair under water. Red Bull Air Race pilots train for emergencies like what Kindlemann experienced in the Swan River, and each one flies with an oxygen bottle in the cockpit. This year, training on how to use the bottle and escape an inverted flooded cockpit was provided at Perth, Australia, prior to the race (Kindlemann's crash race) there. According to Kindlemann's own words, reported Friday by Red Bull, he used the training to stay calm, open the canopy, use the air bottle, and initiate his escape. Red Bull rescue team members reached Kindlemann's inverted plane in less than one minute and were there to help pull him free.

Rules will be strictly enforced, race officials remind Red Bull Air Race pilots from www.redbullairrace.com

Official Results 4th Training Session Perth
Official Results 3rd Training Session Perth

JUST ONE OF THOSE DAYS from Mike Goulian Airshows
The skies dawned blue and sunny today in Perth, the last day of training before Quali on Saturday. Our first training session (T3) went very well and I was feeling very confident in this difficult track.
After pulling off the track at the end of my time slot, I looked down to reduce the power back to a cool down setting and noticed that the engine had very low oil pressure. After circling for a few seconds above the race track, I realized the pressure was not returning to a normal level so I elected to divert into Langley Park, which is our race airport for the weekend. Langley Park is pretty much co-located with the race track so that was the safe option as Jandakot Airport where we were operating was about 10 miles away and it was nothing but city between the track and Jandakot. Needless to say, the safe option was to put it down at Langley Park.
We have worked on the plane all afternoon and evening and think we have located the problem. It's been frustrating as it's not an easy problem to pinpoint. However, we think we have it now.
Since I missed the all important Training 4 session today, I am the "wind dummy" who will lead off the group in ...

April 15 from Cut and Paste Aviation
... 1943 -- Operation Flax is put into effect, the systematic targeting by Allied fighter pilots of Luftwaffe transport aircraft bound for North Africa.
This interdiction operation led to the April 18 "Palm Sunday Massacre". Three squadrons of P-40's assigned to the 57th Fighter Group along with one squadron of P-40' from the 324th Group were on patrol. They were off Cape Bon flying with a top cover of Spitfires. They intercepted the largest aerial convoy of transports to date. The Germans decided to try a force in mass that could defend itself. The slow Junker 52 transports were on their way with supplies to the German Army in North Africa. The accounts of the total lost on both sides differ except that the Americans did lose six P-40's and one Spitfire. The German loss was staggering. The Americans claimed fifty-to-seventy of the German tri-motors were lost along with approximately sixteen to eighteen fighters, consisting of Macchi 202s, Bf-109's, and ME-110's. The actual German loss was 51 aircraft total. Still it is a blow for the supply depot in Tunisia waiting for them.  ...
