Grissom Opens to General Aviation
The long, honored history of Grissom Air Reserve Base in Peru is marking a new milestone. Montgomery Aviation, Inc. of Zionsville will take over the day to day civilian operations at the Grissom Aeroplex in March, 2008 providing aviation fuel, maintenance and other aircraft services. In signing a five year contract with the Miami County Economic Development Authority, Dan Montgomery said, “Our services will shortly include air charter, air taxi, flight training, and aircraft sales.” “Seeing Grissom open as a civilian airport has been a long held dream,” said MCEDA board member James Tidd, adding, “This is the first step in becoming a regional airport. It will have a great impact on our region ” Named after Lieutenant Colonel Virgil “Gus” Grissom, one of the original seven astronauts, Grissom Air Reserve Base has the longest runway in Indiana at 12,500’ x 200’. Montgomery Aviation already serves as Fixed Base Operator at Indianapolis Executive Airport in Zionsville and at Frankfort Municipal Airport in Clinton County. AAR to hire 300 at airport hangar
AAR Corp., the Wood Dale, Ill., company that took over the abandoned United Airlines repair base three years ago, said it hopes to add more than 300 workers this year in Indianapolis.
