AirVenture 2009 As I write this there are 174 days, 15 hours, 48 minutes and 36… 35… 34 seconds to go until AirVenture 2009 begins. In keeping with that theme, I booked my airline tickets today. While in past years I have flown into Bloomington, IL and driven to the show with my friend Chad, this year I decided to make the trip a little shorter and by flying into and out of Appleton, WI which is just a quick 30 minutes drive north of Oshkosk. Surprisingly, using Appleton got me better fares than flying into either Milwaukee or Chicago, and with only 1 stop each way, not bad!
In addition to changes in travel, we had a group discussion and decided that we would not camp this year, but instead would stay in the UW dorms. Frank the tank is going back to college!!! The dorms are a bit more expensive than camping, but this way those of us traveling from afar don't have to schlep our camping gear on the airlines. In addition, real bathrooms… enuf said!
We've got a big group going this year so it should be a blast, I can't wait!

...Red Bull World Championship pilot Alejandro Maclean flew the new airplane Friday.
"It's an exciting aircraft to fly," Maclean said afterward. "Although, it's interesting that I'll be competing against it in the race season."
The new aircraft will be owned and operated by Maclean's competitor on the Red Bull circuit, Sergey Rakhmanin. The race season starts in the spring.
Maclean's own Red Bull circuit airplane is currently being prepared for him in the MXR facility at Wilkes airport.
The aircraft is designated as an MX-R model, specially built for aerobatic racing.
The demonstration Friday included an older MX-S model flown by Australian air race champion Matt Hall, who is the latest pilot named to the Red Bull Air Race World Championship circuit.
The demonstration also featured an aerobatic show by 2008 Advanced Word Aerobatic Champion Rob Holland in his signature aircraft.
Hall and Maclean swooped, dived and buzzed the airport hangar at high speed to the delight of the crowd Friday. ...

Tuskegee Airmen from Air Force Link Top Stories
The Tuskegee Airman were an elite group of African-American pilots in the 1940s. They were pioneers in equality and integration of the Armed Forces. The term "Tuskegee Airmen" refers to all who were involved in the Army Air Corps program to train African Americans to fly and maintain combat aircraft. The Tuskegee Airmen included pilots, navigators, bombardiers, maintenance and support staff, instructors, and all the personnel who kept the planes in the air.
The primary flight training for these servicemembers took place at the Division of Aeronautics of Tuskegee Institute. Air Corps officials built a separate facility at Tuskegee Army Air Field to train the pilots. The Tuskegee Airmen not only battled enemies during wartime but also fought against racism and segregation thus proving they were just as good as any other pilot. Racism was common during World War II and many people did not want blacks to become pilots. They trained in overcrowded classrooms and airstrips, and suffered from the racist attitude of some military officials. The Tuskegee Airman suffered many hardships, but they proved themselves to be world class pilots.

He became hooked, and that's when he found his niche.
Fein, a World War II veteran who served during the Normandy invasion, started a blog in April 2007 to share his stories of the war. Like many veterans who have seen combat, the minute details of Army life are imprinted in his mind. The blog gives him a chance to explore and share his experiences in one of the most public of forums.

Thirty-eight years ago, when Don McLean released "American Pie," few if any of my 12-year-old friends knew the backstory: that it begins with McLean's memories of "the day the music died"–the night Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper and their pilot crashed in a snow-coverered field in Iowa. We just knew we liked the song. (I had the 45.) If we were lucky, the deejay on our AM station played the full version, but most of the time he didn't. (It was almost nine minutes long, after all.)
Likely you're seeing a lot of media accounts of that crash this week on its fiftieth anniversary. If you haven't already, grab the February 2009 issue of AOPA Pilot and read Bruce Landsberg's thoughtful article. It's a tragic chapter in history made sadder still by the realization that, 50 years later, VFR-into-IMC is still taking lives.

Here's one for the eBay enthusiasts. The Israeli Ministry of Defense is holding a public auction on five C-130s, including one involved in the dramatic rescue of Israeli hostages at the Entebbe airport in 1976.
My London-based colleague and mid-east aviation expert David Kaminski-Morrow reports:
The aircraft, bearing Israeli Air Force identifier 106, was one of four deployed after an Air France Airbus A300 - operating Tel Aviv-Athens-Paris - was hijacked out of Greece on 27 June 1976 and diverted to Uganda.
In its official tender documentation, the ministry lists aircraft 106, which was built in 1971, as an 'early H' variant with 14,395 landings. It says this aircraft "may be in use" by the air force until no later than 30 September.

Jan 2009 – The United States Marine Corp announced their schedule last week and that they are bringing an AV-8B “Harrier” demonstration to the 2009 Prairie Air Show (PAS). The Marines receive over 350 requests a year for a Harrier demonstration, but they can only approve 10 - 12 each year.
The Prairie Air show is pleased and honored to have been chosen as one of the very few demonstrations for 2009. The Prairie Air Show, celebrating it’s 25th Anniversary in 2009, is July 11th and 12th at the General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport.

The Prairie Air Show, celebrating it’s 25th Anniversary in 2009, is July 11th and 12th at the General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport. The AV-8B “Harrier” is one of the most exciting aircraft ever built and flown, it’s unique ability to take off vertically, hover, spin, and fly at over 550 miles per hour make for an especially entertaining demonstration. The “Harrier” serves as a single-seat, light attack aircraft that provides offensive air support to the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF). By virtue of its Vertical/Short Take-Off or Landing (V/STOL) capability, the “Harrier” can operate from a variety of amphibious ships, rapidly constructed expeditionary airfields, forward sites (e.g., roads), and damaged conventional airfields. This makes the aircraft particularly well-suited for providing dedicated close air support. This will be the first time a Harrier has ever performed at Prairie Air Show, and it is the only demonstration in Illinois this year.
AAHF brings the Huey Experience Back to PAS!!
Also just announced is the return of the “Huey Experience”. The famous UH-1 “Huey” helicopters from the Vietnam War era will be offering rides to the public at Prairie Air Show 2009. Experience the thrill of a flight over the air show and surrounding area, doors open and gun still mounted in the Army work horse from years past. The “Huey Experience” is provided by the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation, a non-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and public display of Army Aviation Heritage.
New this year is Flight Pass for your “Huey Experience”. With Flight Pass you have the opportunity to reserve your ride in the “Huey” in advance on the PAS website and pre-select your flight time so you don’t have to wait in line. One more way PAS is striving to enhance your air show experience. The Flight Pass reservation system will be available at http://www.prairieair.org/ on March 25th.

Well Folks, did you ever notice that the only time you feel time is slowing down is when you are waiting for something to arrive? It seems forever when you check on something’s delivery date and it has still got 2-4 weeks to go. Amazing isn’t it? I don’t know why I torture myself by buying FineScale Modeler’s Great Scale Modeling special editions. I like to think I’m a pretty good modeler, but when I look at the photo and read the caption of a gorgeous looking kit and find out it’s scratch-built or enhanced with this and that, or even built straight out of the box but weathered with pastels or polished to a mirror-finish, first it inspires me to work smarter and not harder (see last week’s post) and then when that fizzles out, it puts reality right in front of my face. I don’t know how many times, even though I’m really careful, I lose one or two small parts to the rug-monster or glance at the instructions, build something, and find out my glance missed an important part and I have to try taking it apart to add what I missed. It’s always somethin’! Oh well, let’s get down to some serious history, shall we?

This past Saturday I got to see it make its 4th flight. An exciting time at a relatively small airport. Congratulations to Chris and the whole gang that made this birds return to the skies possible. David Schultz Airshows LLC has launched a Spanish and Portuguese language website as part of their main home page of their Corporate Website (www.schultzairshows.com) as part of their continued effort to expand their professional airshow service offerings to military bases, beachfronts, and civilian airports in the Caribbean, South and Central America. David Schultz, President of David Schultz Airshows LLC, notes "Past successes of airshows that our company has conducted in the Dominican Republic have shown a true hunger for aerial entertainment in the Caribbean. Discussions with groups in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and elsewhere in the Central American nations have indicated a strong desire to increase the number of public and military airshows in their respective regions."
David Schultz Airshows LLC successfully coordinated the 2008 Caribbean Airshow at San Isidro Air Base in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic this past February as a kickoff to their 2008 airshow season. The 2008 Caribbean Airshow commemorated the 60th Anniversary of the Fuerza Aérea Dominicana and had aircraft from Brazil, the United States and numerous other countries in attendance. It was the second time in which the company had conducted airshow operations and coordination at San Isidro Air Base with their first show coordinated there in 2002.
"We continue to be very successful and busy here in North America, but being able to bring the same high quality and high energy entertainment that we have had here for decades, is life changing in these Caribbean and South/Central American countries. It is very rewarding to see the positive changes and hope that such events give to the people of these nations," says Schultz. Service offerings will include Professional Airboss and Ground Operations personnel, military and civilian performer/aircraft coordination, and many other services in which the company is well known for in North America.
Plans are underway for further expansion of the website to include numerous other languages of emerging markets during 2009 and 2010.
