RAF AIRPOWER ON SHOW AT AIR TATTOO

Two of the world’s most potent fast jets are among a stellar line-up of RAF aircraft joining celebrations marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee at this summer’s Royal International Air Tattoo.

As well as displays by the RAF’s frontline fighting force, the Typhoon and the Tornado, visitors to the Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford on July 7-8 will be able to see a range of training aircraft including the Tutor, Tucano and King Air as well as historic RAF warbirds such as the Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster. Also taking part will be the legendary RAF Red Arrows, originally formed at RAF Fairford in 1965 who will be performing with seven rather than the usual nine Hawk jets in 2012.

There will be another special homecoming for the RAF’s solo Hawk display pilot Flt Lt Phil Bird who will be performing in his home town of Fairford. He said: “Becoming a fast jet pilot in the RAF was a life-long dream and the idea of displaying in front of the crowds at my home airshow is something I am incredibly excited about.”

It is also likely that the A400M, the new heavy transport aircraft that will supercede the C-130 Hercules in RAF service, will be put through its paces by its Airbus Military test pilot at the airshow.

Air Tattoo spokesman Richard Arquati said the level of RAF participation reflected the important role the Air Tattoo plays in enabling the Service to demonstrate to the public the capability of its aircraft and the professionalism of its men and women. He added: "We’re really looking forward to working with the Royal Air Force to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee with an exciting aerial tribute that will live long in the memory.”

Other Air Tattoo highlights this year include displays by the Vulcan bomber, a US Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey and the European debut of the Al Fursan aerobatics display team from the United Arab Emirates. Special Air Tattoo ‘Earlybird’ tickets, priced £34, are available until the end of March from airtattoo.com or by calling 0800 107 1940.  All accompanied under-16s go free. Free parking.

Kicking fear in the face and getting REAL about my plan - Amelia Earhart | I am compelled to write this blog because of an amazing experience I had on Saturday afternoon. Let’s jump right in. In the past several weeks since announcing my goal of completing the Oakland to Miami flight I have been experiencing bouts of fear. Fear that the planning was too much for me to handle, fear of unknown variables about the flight, fear that some puzzle piece would go missing and I would be left with an uncompleted goal. This wasn’t the kind of fear that kept me up at night or stopped my in my tracks, this was the kind of fear that was just strong enough to dull my usual panache-y ways and keep my mind from focusing on what was really calling me to complete such a grand adventure. This fear was a pesky itch that I just couldn’t scratch....

Legendary Air Force Thunderbirds Give Camelina Jet Biofuel a Workout - Clean Technica | It’s showtime for camelina, a modest, weedy little plant that has started to make a big splash in the biofuel world. The U.S. Air Force took camelina under its wing a couple of years ago and tested it out on the A-10C Thunderbolt II, and it must have done pretty well because for the first time ever a camelina based jet fuel has been used by the Thunderbirds, the Air Force’s official aerial demonstration team...

Movie Monday - May 23 - Lockheed's 56 year old C-130 - FlightBlogger | This week's Movie Monday is another trip into the vault for classic aircraft development footage. This declassified 1955 report on the original  Lockheed C-130 Hercules runs 13min - a bit shorter than usual MMs - but the level of detail provided in the report is really extensive. News from the Media Launch of this summer's Royal International Air Tattoo

HURRICANE HERALDS AIR TATTOO

THE ONLY airworthy Battle of Britain Hurricane still in existence flew in to RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire today for the media launch of this year’s Royal International Air Tattoo.

At the event, the RAF will be staging its flagship public commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, and the Hurricane R4118, together with its Battle of Britain pilot Wg Cdr Bob Foster, DFC, played a starring role at today’s media event.
After watching the iconic wartime aircraft touch down, Wg Cdr Foster said: “It’s wonderful to see her flying again. I first saw R4118 nearly 70 years ago, in August 1940. After October 1940, when she was badly shot up, I didn’t see her again until she was brought back to England as something of a wreck in 2001. Now she’s restored to flying condition and it’s just wonderful, and very nostalgic, to see her in action.

“I’d love to have another go in her,” he added, “but I doubt they’d let me!”

Wg Cdr Foster joined the RAF in 1939 and was posted to 605 Squadron. During the Battle of Britain he flew Hurricane R4118 on several missions, including one in which he damaged two JU-88s and shared one kill.

He also saw action in the Pacific arena, helping defend the Darwin area of Northern Australia from Japanese attack throughout 1943, and being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1944. Returning to the UK he took up an RAF public relations assignment, being sent to Normandy within three weeks of the D-Day invasion, and eventually was one of the first RAF officers to enter Paris with the liberating French army, taking part in General de Gaulle’s triumphant procession down the Champs-Elysees.

His Hurricane was sent to India as a training aircraft in 1943 where it remained until being discovered and returned to England in 2001.

FATHER AND SON TEAM UP FOR LAUNCH

ACTOR AND dancer Ricky Whittle flew into RAF Fairford today to help kick-off the media launch for this year’s Royal International Air Tattoo on July 17 and 18.

He made up one half of a father-and-son team publicising the July event which draws aviation fans from all round the world, and which features over 300 aircraft. Ricky’s dad Harry is now a civilian helicopter crew instructor, having joined the RAF in 1977 where he worked on Puma, Chinook and Wessex helicopters, taking part in operations in Northern Ireland, the Lebanon, the Falkland Islands and Bosnia.

Having supported his son all the way through last year’s series of Strictly Come Dancing, today marked Harry’s turn to be supported. Ricky flew in with him aboard a Griffin helicopter, from the Defence Helicopter Flying School at RAF Shawbury in Shropshire, to highlight the Air Tattoo’s operational theme of Training 2010.

Harry said: “I work at RAF Shawbury training aircrew on helicopters with basic tactics. I’ve come back into training relatively recently and so I’ve seen the progress that’s been made with new equipment and modern technology: it’s all about dealing with the next threat.”

Ricky added: “I always wanted to be in the RAF, inspired by being brought up in the RAF family as my dad was posted to Hampshire, Hong Kong and Northern Ireland. In fact, Top Gun was one of the first films I ever saw and that really inspired me – I really did want to be Maverick!

“But my dad has been a massive inspiration all along, so it’s great to fly in with him – and a bit of a novelty as this is the first time we’ve actually flown in the same aircraft – and to be a part of the Air Tattoo launch. Bumping into so many of dad’s old friends, who all remember me when I was little with an Afro, really brought home to me the family culture of the RAF.”

While at RAF Fairford, Ricky had time to join in the World Cup theme, donning an England shirt and posing for photos with Forces’ Sweetheart Nell McAndrew. The celebrities both posed beside a giant football alongside pilots Capt Calvin ‘Quake’ Peterson from the USAF and the RAF’s Flt Lt Jim ‘Woody’ Woodward. With England’s opening World Cup match against the States looming on Saturday, the pilots joined in the fun, posing for photos in front of the RAF’s most potent front-line fighter, the Typhoon, and its US counterpart, the F-15.

This summer’s Air Tattoo will be staging the RAF’s flagship public commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, and the launch also featured the only airworthy Battle of Britain Hurricane, which flew in to be reunited with its Battle of Britain pilot Wg Cdr Bob Foster, DSO.
  • This year’s Air Tattoo takes place from July 17 to 18 at RAF Fairford, when more than 160,000 visitors are expected to view around 300 aircraft from across the world.
  • The event is staged in support of its parent charity, the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust, which provides financial support to a wide variety of RAF-related projects and initiatives within the RAF family. Since 2005 it has gifted over £1.3 million to worthy causes.

STARS KICK OF AIR TATTOO LAUNCH - Air Tattoo
FORGET Peter Crouch & Co, when it comes to a display of aerial firepower there's only one team to turn to – the Royal Air Force. And Britain's best airmen turned out today (June 9), bringing an impressive Top-Gun strikeforce - a Typhoon, Tornado and a Harrier - to kick-off the media launch for this summer's Royal International Air Tattoo, at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.
The pilots were backed up by celebrity guests Forces' Sweetheart Nell McAndrew and Hollyoaks actor Ricky Whittle. Both stars were on top sporting form at the United States Air Force Base at Fairford, donning England shirts and posing for photos beside a giant football with pilots from the RAF and the USAF.  <<complete article>>

Ferte Alais 2010

Our friend, Frederic Cottin, sent us the following from Ferte Alais 2010 ...

Last week-end, I went to the Ferte-Alais air show, and this cession was like a good old wine, tasty and sunny!
This meeting, wich was the thirty seventh edition, and is organised  yearly by  the Jean Salis team, a gang of aircraft lovers with real showman skills!
The Fighter's collection, lead by Sir Stephen Grey, came in reinforcement from Duxford (England) with  beautifull warbirds and more particulary a gorgeous Hawker Hurricane. ... And this Hurricane is a real veteran of the Battle of Britain with five kills!
Two themes prevailed:  The Seventy Years of Battle of Brittain and the First Century of the French Aeronavale!

Sunday Show Cancelled - Florida International Air Show
The Sunday Florida International Air Show was canceled today because of a storm at the airport. A heavy rain with lighting passed through Punta Gorda and the airport about 9:30 AM and continued for over two hours. Air Show board members made the decision about 11:45.
As the storm neared the show site, air conditioned buses were moved onto the tarmac for patrons who were on site. After the heavy rain let up, they were invited to the show's upgrade tents for lunch.
This was the first cancellation of the show in several years.

A story of great courage and indeed heroism for Hanadi Zakaria Al-Hindi. In Saudia Arabia, women aren't allowed to drive a car, let alone pilot a plane. But Hanadi, like Bessie Coleman a little less than a century ago, did not let the naysayers stop her, and travelled to a different country to pursue her ambition. What turned you on to flying? | I learned to fly with Leeds University Air Squadron back when sex was safe and flying was dangerous. We flew from Dishforth alongside the A1 and I spent many lovely hours doing practice forced landings and aeros over the Vale of York. We did lots of stalling and spinning back then but young people don't seem to do that any more. I think it is a shame that you can't experience the thrill and sense of danger associated with getting to know your limits based on first-rate flying training.
