Book - "Frank Whittle: Invention of the Jet" from AirSpace by Orion | Hello all. Firstly, apologies for my extended absence from the blog, a number of factors all contributed in not getting some real time to sit and write, and all of a sudden seven weeks had passed by! I'll try to keep it more consistent from now on. One thing I have managed to accomplish is reading "Frank Whittle: Invention of the Jet", by Andrew Nahum (Principal Curator for Transport and the London Science Museum) , which had been burning a hole on my bookshelf for a few months. Evidently the book has been out for a few years now, but it somehow fell below my radar until recently (actually, I don't think I've read a book that was newly released in years). I very much enjoyed reading it and I recommend it to anyone who has any interest in aviation history, as the work of Frank Whittle has had an impact in one way or another in just about every field of aviation since the Second World War…

City administrators recommend restoring two vintage planes (Vancouver) CHQR Newsroom | City administrators are recommending $1.6 million dollars be spent to restore two vintage airplanes to static display conditions. The De-Havilland Mosquito and Hawker Hurricane have been a source of controversy over the last couple of years as aldermen debated whether to sell one plane to restore the other. Initially the plan was to sell the Mosquito to a private investor in the U.K and use the proceeds to restore the Hawker but, after much debate, it was decided to look at what the public wanted and the feasibility of restoration. A report going to a city hall committee says to restore the two aircraft will cost $1.6 million dollars. That will restore the engines, propellers and major components to maintain the historic integrity of the aircraft and allow it to be on static display. Restoring the Mosquito to flying condition would cost $4.6 million, while it would cost nearly $2 million to restore the Hawker Hurricane.

Aviation Trivia of the Day by JP Santiago | One year before Boeing announced the go-ahead of the Boeing 727 program on 5 December 1960, there were serious reservations within the manufacturer about whether or not to proceed with the 727. At the time Boeing's commercial division was still quite a bit smaller than the military aircraft division and the company's desire to have wide customer base resulted in numerous variations in the Boeing 707/720 family that stretched the company's resources to the point that for every 707 delivered, Boeing was taking a $1 million loss. At this point, the De Havilland in Britain was about a year ahead of Boeing on work on its own trijet, the DH.121 Trident which was designed to broadly meet a similar set of specifications as that of the 727…

Henley Benefit Airshow Roster Continues To Grow from AVwebFlash Current Issue
Since we last spoke with the organizers of the upcoming benefit airshow for the Alan Henley Foundation (click here for a podcast of AVweb's interview with Bobbi Thompson last December), the lineup has grown to include a long list of who's who in the airshow world. "I think we can say with confidence this will be the finest and largest-ever group of North American airshow performers to appear in one show," Thompson told AVweb this week. The list of performers is at 30 and still growing, and includes Patty Wagstaff, Sean Tucker, the Aeroshell Aerobatic Team, Greg Poe, Gene Soucy, Red Thunder, the Iron Eagles, and many more. "All proceeds from ticket and raffle sales will go to the Foundation and all donated monies will be given as well," Thompson says. Everyone involved in the show is paying their own expenses and donating their time, Thompson said, so the only costs to be covered will be fuel, oil, and some other minimal expenses. The show will be held at Cecil Field in Jacksonville, Fla., April 18 and 19. Tickets are $10, $5 for children 6 to 12, and free for children under 6. Tickets will soon be available online at the show's Web site. Henley, who was the lead pilot for the Aeroshell team, was paralyzed in a fall at home last year just before EAA AirVenture, and is still undergoing extensive rehabilitation.

One story about Rolf Arne that may not be widely known is the story told in Duncan Smith’s book “Spitfire into battle”. Marine Corp. bringing Harrier demonstration to 2009 Prairie Air Show®
The Prairie Air show is pleased and honored to have been chosen as one of the very few demonstrations for 2009. The Prairie Air Show, celebrating it’s 25th Anniversary in 2009, is July 11th and 12th at the General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport. The AV-8B “Harrier” is one of the most exciting aircraft ever built and flown, it’s unique ability to take off vertically, hover, spin, and fly at over 550 miles per hour make for an especially entertaining demonstration. The “Harrier” serves as a single-seat, light attack aircraft that provides offensive air support to the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF). By virtue of its Vertical/Short Take-Off or Landing (V/STOL) capability, the “Harrier” can operate from a variety of amphibious ships, rapidly constructed expeditionary airfields, forward sites (e.g., roads), and damaged conventional airfields. This makes the aircraft particularly well-suited for providing dedicated close air support. This will be the first time a Harrier has ever performed at Prairie Air Show, and it is the only demonstration in Illinois this year.
AAHF brings the Huey Experience Back to PAS!!
Also just announced is the return of the “Huey Experience”. The famous UH-1 “Huey” helicopters from the Vietnam War era will be offering rides to the public at Prairie Air Show 2009. Experience the thrill of a flight over the air show and surrounding area, doors open and gun still mounted in the Army work horse from years past. The “Huey Experience” is provided by the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation, a non-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and public display of Army Aviation Heritage.
New this year is Flight Pass for your “Huey Experience”. With Flight Pass you have the opportunity to reserve your ride in the “Huey” in advance on the PAS website and pre-select your flight time so you don’t have to wait in line. One more way PAS is striving to enhance your air show experience. The Flight Pass reservation system will be available at http://www.prairieair.org/ on March 25th.
The 2009 Prairie Air Show is shaping up to be the family fun event of the summer with something for everyone. Besides the aircraft exhibits and demonstrations there will be many other attractions and exhibits for people to enjoy. Watch for future announcements at http://www.prairieair.org/
