First cruise missile — Kettering’s Bug  from Travel for Aircraft by travelforaircraft - Powered and controlled aviation began in the early years of the 20th century and aircraft rapidly evolved through WW I becoming large and with multiple engines — even flying onto and off of water. Between the bombing halt of 1968 and the start of the North Vietnamese Easter Offensive in 1972, air combat over North Vietnam was nearly non-existent…

'American-air-day' at East Kirkby 3-5-2010 from Gary Watson's Posts - Stick and Rudder by Gary Watson | Always nice to visit, East Kirkby about 1 hour 10min from home, and easy to get to, and is the home of Avro Lancaster 'Just Jane' and some wonderful people. Now it was Bank holiday monday, so it was always going to be in the 'lap-of-the-gods' with regard to to the weather. As it turned out, 'blistery showers' in the morning, and very windy, to the tune that the 'flypast' by the BBMF Spitfire and Hurricane, and Lancaster was cancelled…

Book - "Frank Whittle: Invention of the Jet" from AirSpace by Orion | Hello all. Firstly, apologies for my extended absence from the blog, a number of factors all contributed in not getting some real time to sit and write, and all of a sudden seven weeks had passed by! I'll try to keep it more consistent from now on. One thing I have managed to accomplish is reading "Frank Whittle: Invention of the Jet", by Andrew Nahum (Principal Curator for Transport and the London Science Museum) , which had been burning a hole on my bookshelf for a few months. Evidently the book has been out for a few years now, but it somehow fell below my radar until recently (actually, I don't think I've read a book that was newly released in years). I very much enjoyed reading it and I recommend it to anyone who has any interest in aviation history, as the work of Frank Whittle has had an impact in one way or another in just about every field of aviation since the Second World War…

On This Day in Aviation History: May 5th by Phil Derner Jr.| Cinco de Mayo is a busy day in aviation, with Alan Shepard heading into space, the miraculous disaster averted with Eastern Flight 855 near Miami in 1983, and two unrelated hijackings on the same day in 1972. The Air France-KLM merger, yet another Amy Johnson first, and much, much more…
