Pacific Coast Air Museum to Host 9/11 Remembrance and Open New F-15 Eagle First Responder Exhibit

The PACIFIC COAST AIR MUSEUM (PCAM) is proud to host a ceremony on 9/11/2011 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 to honor the brave men and women who responded on that day, to honor the memory those who perished and to display the untold story of heroism in the air by U.S. Air Force pilots and on the ground by Air Force and FAA controllers on that day.  This free event is open to the public and will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday September 11, 2011 at the Pacific Coast Air Museum at the Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa, California.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Lt. Col. Tim “Duff” Duffy of the 101st fighter squadron, 102nd Fighter Wing based at the Otis Air National Guard Base (ANGB) Massachusetts near Cape Cod, MA and his wingman, Major Daniel “Nasty” Nash, were on active alert.  That morning “Duff” received orders from NORAD to respond to a report of a commercial airliner hijacking.  As the leader of the flight of two F-15A Eagle fighter jets “Duff” and his aircraft were the first American airborne fighter response on that day.

The aircraft flown by Lt. Col Duffy on September 11, 2001 was F-15A Eagle 77-0102.  “102” flew combat air patrol missions that day to clear the New York City airspace of almost 100 aircraft.  “102” and the 102nd Fighter Wing continued to protect the skies over the eastern United States for several months.  By February 2002 the wing flew 2,388 combat patrols.

The historic “First Responder” aircraft “102” was retired to the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center (AMARC) at Davis-Monthan AFB, Tucson, AZ on July 31, 2006 after nearly thirty years of service.  “102” was the wing commander’s aircraft and was the lead aircraft that responded from the alert shelters at Otis ANGB that day.

In the spring of 2009 the National Museum of the United States Air Force awarded the Pacific Coast Air Museum the honor to take possession of “102” and put it on display.  The aircraft was partially disassembled and transported from AMARC in Tucson the museum December 2010.  Since then the aircraft has been reassembled, an exhibit has been designed and the first phase of the F-15 “First Responder” Exhibit will be unveiled on 9/11/2001.

Our goal is to build a world class exhibit to honor those involved in 9/11 and to provide a venue for the public to see it and learn more about the events of that day.  To that end the museum has already begun an intensive fundraising campaign to raise $250,000 for the exhibit.  We evaluated several design concepts for the exhibit and selected a winning design firm.  The concrete foundation for the exhibit was poured in early August and the aircraft was hoisted into place just this week.  Finishing touches on phase one of the exhibit will be in place for the ceremony on 9/11.

At 2:00pm on Sunday, September 11, 2011 the museum will conduct a brief ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and to dedicate the F-15 “First Responder” Exhibit. The ceremony will include short presentations by museum leadership and local dignitaries, a moment of silence, unveiling of the exhibit and possible flyovers by local first responder aircraft.  CHP Captain Greg Tracy and Tom Reed, former Secretary of the Air Force, will lead the commemoration and dedication ceremonies.

Wings Over Wine Country 2011 Commemorates the 10th Anniversary of Sept. 11th, 2001 and the Centennial of Naval Aviation

The PACIFIC COAST AIR MUSEUM (PCAM) is proud to host the Wings Over Wine Country Air Show on August 20-21, 2011 at the Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa California.

A tremendous lineup of flying includes military jet demonstrations, world class civilian aerobatics and a host of Warbirds. A large number of static displays will include the museum’s collection of over 30 restored aircraft (most of which will be open for climb aboards), civilian and military statics and morning access to the warbirds that will fly later in the show. In addition, this year’s air show program will commemorate two historic events, the tenth anniversary of September 11th, 2001 and the Centennial of Naval Aviation.

Each day the air show will open with a ceremony honoring the bravery and sacrifice of the first responders and those who perished. The local police and fire departments will have a significant presence in both equipment and personnel in a show of local pride. Opening ceremonies will include local dignitaries and Pacific Coast Air Museum leadership in a brief program that will commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11. In December 2010 the Pacific Coast Air Museum took possession of the first aircraft to respond on September 11, 2001, an F-15A Eagle. Check the museum website for updates on its restoration.

A late addition to the Wings Over Wine County Air Show is two time Red Bull Air Race champion Kirby Chambliss. Kirby is also a five time National Aerobatic Champion. He was recently featured at the EAA Air Venture Air Shows in Oshkosh. Kirby flies an extremely challenging and exciting show in his Red Bull Edge 540, including the famous “Cobra” takeoff. Don’t miss Kirby Chambliss’ only performance in northern California.
Patty Wagstaff, three-time U.S. national aerobatics champion and internationally acclaimed air show pilot to do a “sneak preview aerobatic act” before our show opens each day.

Flying and static exhibits will commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Naval Aviation. In January 1911, Eugene B. Ely completed the world’s first landing on a ship, the USS Pennsylvania in the San Francisco Bay. An hour later he took off from the ship marking the first combined landing and takeoff from a ship board runway. To honor that milestone we plan to have a variety of WWII Navy Warbirds fly in the air show and have the museum’s collection of Navy fighter jets displayed together. Finally, a T-33 Shooting Star, flown by Greg Colyer and painted in Blue Angels colors, will fly an aerobatic routine during the show.

Military participation in the Wings Over Wine Country Air Show includes the F/A-18 Super Hornet, the C-17 Globemaster III, U-2 Dragon Lady overflights, and T-38 Talon flybys. (above subject to military scheduling).

Our outstanding civilian air show line up includes:

US Air Force “First Responder” Fighter Aircraft from 9/11 Awarded to Santa Rosa, CA Museum

Historic F-15 Eagle Aircraft First on the Scene in NYC will be on Permanent Display

Santa Rosa, Ca – In an unprecedented opportunity The Pacific Coast Air Museum has been awarded the honor of providing the home for a historic national treasure – the very first aircraft to respond on the scene to the World Trade Center twin towers attack in New York City on September 11, 2001. Currently en-route, the F-15 “First Responder” will ultimately be fully restored and the centerpiece of an interactive, educational exhibit. A press conference with Thomas C. Reed, previous Secretary of the US Air Force, General George "Jim" Eade, USAF (Ret.), Ernesto Olivares, Mayor of Santa Rosa and other VIPs is set for the dramatic arrival Tuesday, December 14th at 10:00a.m. at the museum at The Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport 2230 Becker Blvd. Santa Rosa, CA 95403.

The aircraft has been officially awarded to the museum by the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Now, an aggressive fund-raising effort to build a befitting exhibit is under way, working toward raising $250,000.00. The exhibit will honor those who perished and those who responded in a valiant effort to save lives, as well as educate visitors and tell the untold story of heroism in the skies and on the ground that day. The Pacific Coast Air Museum is proud to be the West Coast destination for the public to learn about what many call our generation’s Pearl Harbor, affecting all of our personal freedoms forever and shaping how we behave as a nation.

The F-15 Eagle “First Responder” Story

On September 11th 2001, two U.S. Air Force F-15 Eagles from the 101st Fighter Squadron, 102nd Fighter Wing, Otis Air National Guard Base (ANGB) Massachusetts were scrambled by NORAD in response to commercial airliners being hijacked and used as weapons to attack the World Trade Center in New York City. This armed patrol was this nation's first airborne response to the terrorist attacks of that day arriving over Manhattan only moments after the World Trade Center was struck. The sight of these F-15s over New York City was the show of strength New Yorkers on the ground needed to see in their darkest hour. Accounts of that moment convey the relief and sense of security citizens felt when they looked up to see and hear fighters circling the air space – there to protect us.

About the Museum
Pacific Coast Air Museum (PCAM) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the acquisition, restoration, safe operation and display of historic aircraft, preserving aviation history and to providing an educational venue for students and the community. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport, PCAM operates both an indoor museum with exhibits featuring famous military and civilian pilots and aviation innovators, as well as historical photos and artifacts; and an outside museum featuring more than two dozen excellent examples of both contemporary and antique aircraft.

The scope and breadth of the museum and its member activities have grown dramatically over the past several years to include beautiful static aircraft restorations, additional museum exhibits, a wide array of education programs, scouting and youth activities, a world

Visitors to the website will notice a bold new look with easy navigation, fresh content and a variety of pictures from our activities, the museum and the air show. Tabs and drop down selections make it very easy to navigate to the content you are looking for in very few mouse clicks. You can also sign up to follow the museum via Facebook and Twitter.

Pacific Coast Air Museum Receives Air Force Museum Certification

The Pacific Coast Air Museum, located at the Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa, CA, has been awarded full certification by the National Museum of the United States Air Force, located at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio.

This prestigious certification is the result of a rigorous two and one-half year process culminating in an on-site inspection of the Pacific Coast Air Museum by the Air Force Museum staff.

The National Museum of the United States Air Force (Air Force Museum), in addition to its own heralded aviation collection in Dayton, Ohio, manages nearly 33,000 items on loan to field museums and domestic and international heritage sites. It also manages more than 6,400 historical artifacts and aerospace vehicles on loan to 454 civilian museums, cities, municipalities and veterans' organizations throughout the world. Only 103 private civilian Air Museums such as the Pacific Coast Air Museum have ever received certification from the Air Force Museum.

The certification means that the Pacific Coast Air Museum has been judged to have achieved the highest professional standards outlined by the American Association of Museums.

According to Dave Pinsky, Executive Director of the Pacific Coast Air Museum, the Air Force Museum staff commented that the Pacific Coast Air Museum’s aircraft collection was amongst “the best restored and best maintained aircraft collection they had ever seen in a private Air Museum”.

In addition to being a prestigious certification recognizing the Pacific Coast Air Museum as achieving high professional standards, the Air Force Museum certification means that the Pacific Coast Air Museum is eligible to receive Air Force Museum aircraft and artifacts on loan from the Air Force Museum. According to Executive Director Dave Pinsky, the museum staff is working on the loan of several artifacts to augment the SR-71 Blackbird display at the museum, an aircraft Pinsky flew while in the Air Force.

The Pacific Coast Air Museum restores, maintains and displays historic aircraft, preserves and displays Sonoma County aviation history, and provides an educational venue for the community, especially for schoolchildren.

The Pacific Coast Air Museum also produces the annual two day “Wings Over Wine Country” Air Show on the third weekend of August each year.
