Modern fighters: why so similar? from David Cenciotti's weblog - the most visited Italian Aviation Blog by David Cenciotti | Let's make it simple. According to aircraft designers (often accused of copying from other projects….), modern fighters are similar one another because computers model more or less in the same way the shapes required to achieve the requested performances. Maybe. At the end of the day, although showing a certain degree of similarity at first glance, depending on the way a computer uses the law of physics and aerodynamics to solve a common problem, at a more in-depth look, each fighter shows its own peculiarities, as a consequences of the "personal touch" of the designing team…

This Week In Military/Aviation History 8-14 March from Warbirds Online by Tom Kwiatkowski Sr. | Well Folks, here we are again a week older and, with luck, a day or so wiser. Boy, this economic situation is wreaking havoc with airshows so far this year. Three in the area where I am have cancelled due to economic reasons. It's a sad thing to have happen, but what can you do? I guess that it just makes the ones that manage to still happen will be that much nicer to attend. Well, let's start our weekly trek down History Lane, shall we? Yes, I think we shall. Tom K.

CoolPix - Modern Military: Holy Smoke! B-47 Stratojet JATO Takeoff by Martt | This amazing entry in the CoolPix collection helps to set the line between 'Vintage Military' and 'Modern Military'.  I've decided we'll make the break at the end of WWII.  This also fits pretty well since that's basically the time period where we entered the jet age as well.  This pic is from 1954 of a Boeing B-47 making a Jet Assisted Take Off (JATO).  The rather massive JATO package was a great help in getting the aircraft off the ground a lot quicker than with just the 6 wing mounted jet engines.  Tho the airplane was fast, with a cruising speed of about 550mph, the jet engine technology of the time didn't make good thrust at slow speeds.  JATO was a good solution to this issue at the time.  It's really interesting to see this huge amount of smoke pouring out of the rockets, as well as a lot coming the 6 jets too.  Early jet engines were also well known for making a lot of smoke!...

The Adventures of Chopper Chick!: Obama's historic all-female Marine One crew from copterchick.blogspot.com
It was another first in presidential history. When President Obama left the White House on Thursday for Andrews Air Force Base, the Marine One helicopter that lifted off from the South Lawn was piloted by the first female helicopter aircraft commander in Marine One history. Maj. Jennifer Grieves of Glendale, Ariz., flew her first Marine One mission in May 2008, and had flown Obama and then-President George W. Bush.In honor of Grieves' last day in the rotation, the Marines assigned two other female officers -- Maj. Jennifer L. Marino, of Palisade, Colo., and Sgt. Rachael A. Sherman, of Traverse City, Mich. -- to complete the crew. And that all-female crew was another first. Marines say Grieves is off to Command and Staff College in Quantico, Va.

I will mention two of the sets of photos as my favorites.

21st July 2009 it will be exactly 90 years since aviation pioneer Anthony Fokker started the ‘Nederlandsche Vliegtuigenfabriek’ (Dutch aircraft factory) in Amsterdam, with the main aim of building and selling aircraft. Blue Devil vs Blue Angel Video from Alabama Aviator - Aviation News
Although not the first time Motor Trend has pitted a hot car against a jet, this competition will surly satisfy the ultimate need for speed. Motor Trend raced a Corvette ZR1 against a U.S. Navy F/A Hornet because, as they say, "we'd already made all the Farraris turn red. "Staged at the USN Blue Angels home base, Naval Air Station Pensacola, Motor Trend had an unprecedented one hour of suspended air ops time to race. "Time enough for two runs. And a bonus: After our race, the pilot and I would switch rides. He'd try my Blue Devil, and I'd sample his Blue Angel," according to Motor Trend writer, Arthur St. Antoine…
