MOBILE ‘BIG’ SCREEN THEATER AND EXHIBIT HONORING TUSKEGEE AIRMEN TO VISIT AIR EXPO

EDEN PRAIRIE, MINNESOTA (JULY 3, 2013) – The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Red Tail Squadron will welcome visitors at its free RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit at the 2013 Air Expo presented by Wings of the North, on July 13-14, 2013.  The RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit is a truly unique opportunity for the young and the young-at-heart to not only learn, but experience the inspiring story of the Tuskegee Airmen while being immersed in a theatrical experience.  Standard admission to the Air Expo will apply; however there is no charge for the exhibit. In addition, the Red Tail P-51C Mustang will perform in the air show and be on display for all to see. 

Lt. Col. Hiram Mann, one of the original Tuskegee Airmen, will also be in attendance and greeting fans at the Exhibit.

During the original movie aptly named, "RISE ABOVE," audience members will be transported into what it was like to be a black airman during WWII and the obstacles faced by America’s first black military pilots and their support personnel,known today as the Tuskegee Airmen, as they worked toward their goal of becoming U.S. Army Air Corps pilots in the early 1940s.  At the conclusion of the film, audiences experience the excitement and thrill of flying the world’s greatest fighter aircraft, the P-51 Mustang, in formation, aerobatics, a break and a few low passes.  Filmed with a 180-degree lens along with the state-of-the-art theater design, the movie experience gives attendees the feeling that you are actually flying in the airplane. 

“The exhibit is truly a one-of-a-kind adventure similar to something you would experience at Disneyland,” said Brad Lang, CAF Red Tail Squadron Leader. “The overall message is about rising above to reach your potential no matter your circumstances; the film uses the story of the Tuskegee Airmen and the story of the CAF Red Tail Squadron to inspire young people to achieve their potential, but the message resonates with all ages because of the unique and interactive way it is told.  This is an experience you won’t want to miss.”

The exhibit is a mobile ‘big’ screen theater with a customized 53' trailer with expandable sides that houses a 160-degree panoramic curved movie screen and seating for 35 in climate-controlled comfort. It showcases a short original movie,"RISE ABOVE," focusing on what the Tuskegee Airmen had to overcome to be allowed to fly and fight for their country during World War II. This experience highlights how to set a goal and succeed even when all odds are against you; just like the original Tuskegee Airmen achieved.

Barnstormers bring high-flying tour to North Iowa - MASON CITY — They all walk — or rather, fly — different paths, but they all have one abiding passion: The sky. "I always wanted to fly a biplane coast to coast," recalled Richard "Speed" Hornbeck, one of several vintage airplane pilots who are part of the American Barnstormers Tour. Within a week of restoring his 1929 Waco Texaco bi-plane, "my buddy and I jumped in, took off for California. It took about a week to get there. Looks like the WhiteKnightTwo won't be all play after all, as the British government wants to use Virgin Galactic's spacecraft to send some state satellites into low orbit. According to Flight Global, The Government wants to develop a rocket, dubbed "LauncherOne," to sit on the back of WhiteKnightTwo and when the craft reaches the proper altitude, lauch off on its own to begin orbit. The microsatellites would be under 200kg in weight, though it's unclear exactly what the satellites will do. But with all these add-ons, WhiteKnightTwo is starting to remind me of The Centurions or something. [Flight Global via The Register]

Hollywood Discovers Aviation from AVwebFlash Current Issue - Suddenly, airplanes are the big thing for the big screen. We caught up with producer Karl Koeppen at Sun 'n Fun, who is ready to start work on "Northern Lights," about airshow pilots, later this summer. (Click here for the podcast interview with AVweb editor-in-chief Russ Niles.) This week, a film crew visited EAA in Oshkosh, Wis., to shoot aviation scenes for "Public Enemies," a gangster movie starring Johnny Depp. Also this week, Variety reported that Hilary Swank and Richard Gere will star in a movie about Amelia Earhart. Shooting will start later this month in Toronto, Nova Scotia, and South Africa. Of course, airplanes are nothing new in the movies. The Reel Stuff Film Festival opens this week in Dayton, Ohio, with eight classic movies on screen, Thursday through Saturday.
