GEICO SKYTYPERS PERFORMING AT WINGS AND WAVES AIR SHOW IN DAYTONA BEACH
Daytona Beach, FL (September 18, 2012) – The GEICO Skytypers are scheduled to perform Saturday and Sunday October 13-14th at the Wings and Waves Air Show in Daytona Beach, Florida.
The team "types" messages at 10,000 feet with puffs of smoke in dot matrix-style letters. The GEICO Skytypers use six of the remaining 11 North American SNJ-2 planes left in the world to write messages at an altitude of 10,000 feet. Each World War II-era plane has been restored and equipped and with a computer that coordinates the smoke puffs from the aircraft.
"The contrast between the advanced technology to produce the messages paired with 1940s vintage aircraft is truly unique," said Steve Kapur, GEICO Skytypers marketing officer and pilot. "We consider it a privilege to fly these warbirds on behalf of GEICO at air shows all across the U.S." said Kapur, who has been flying with the team for more than a decade.
Maneuvering the antique aircraft requires great skill and expertise. Most of the GEICO Skytypers pilots earned their wings in the military and several currently fly for commercial airlines. During skytyping missions the pilots fly 250 feet apart in a wide "line-abreast" formation. When aligned, the smoke puffs form letters as tall as the Empire State Building. Skytyping is 17 times faster than skywriting because each pilot can create a letter every four seconds. Entire messages can be as large as 6 to 8 miles wide. Messages are visible for 15 miles in each direction on a clear day.
In addition to skytyping, the team also performs a low-altitude, precision-formation flying routine combined with a thrilling aeronautical demonstration. The six aircraft fill the sky and come from all directions, providing spectators a unique viewing experience.
Members of the media and air show representatives are invited to visit the team transporter during the air show weekend for interviews.

Embry-Riddle’s Wings & Waves Set to Soar over Daytona Beach
U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, Canadian Forces Snowbirds and Black Diamond Jet Team Headline Oct. 13-14 Air Show
The show begins at 11 a.m. daily on the shore in front of the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort. The event, which is the only air show in North America to host three jet demonstration teams, is free and open to the public.
Numerous Embry-Riddle alumni are scheduled to participate including Maj. J.R. Williams and Maj. Jason Moore of the Thunderbirds, world-record holding skydiver Cheryl Stearns, GEICO Skytyper lead solo pilot Steve Salmirs and Black Diamond Jet Team Leader Jerry "Jive" Kerby, along with Embry-Riddle sponsored aerobatic performer Matt Chapman.
"We are especially pleased that this year's air show will feature a large number of our alumni," Embry-Riddle President Dr. John P. Johnson said. "Some of the best pilots in the world are educated at Embry-Riddle. Having them perform at Wings & Waves is testimony to that fact. It's going to be a great show."
This year's featured performers include:
- U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds – Now in their 59th year of wowing audiences withtheir combat fighter pilot skills, the 130-person squadron deemed the USAF's "Ambassadors in Blue" represents nearly 700,000 active duty, guard and reserve airmen serving at home and abroad – including two team members who are Embry-Riddle alum and another graduate tapped for the team later this year. Prescott graduate Williams (lead pilot No. 5) and Daytona Beach alum Moore (maintenance officer) will be joined by 2011 Embry-Riddle Worldwide grad Capt. Joshua Boudreaux at left wing as Thunderbird No. 2 for the 2013 team. The demonstration is a mix of six aircraft performing formation flying and solo routines. www.afthunderbirds.com
- Canadian Forces Snowbirds – The iconic Snowbirds Demonstration Team (431 Squadron) composed of approximately 80 members of the Canadian Forces and the Royal Canadian Air Force will perform only once in Florida this year – and this is it. The Snowbirds' pilots and aircraft technicians spend the winter months at their home base in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada practicing more than 50 five-, seven- and nine-plane formations. The Snowbirds fly the Canadair CT-114 Tutor, a Canadian-built jet that was used by the Canadian Forces as a basic pilot-training aircraft from 1963 until 2000. www.rcaf-arc.forces.gc.ca/snowbirds.
- Black Jet Diamond Team – Making their first appearance, the Lakeland, Fla.-based aerobatic civilian-owned jet team will fly two L-39s led by Embry-Riddle Alum Jerry "Jive" Kerby. www.blackdiamondjetteam.com
- GEICO Skytypers – A flight squadron of six vintage WWII airplanes performing precision flight maneuvers, the Skytypers are the only civilian squadron currently appearing at airshows flying WWII aircraft, the SNJ-2. Of the 11 SNJ-2 airplanes still in existence, the team uses six. Embry-Riddle Daytona Beach campus alum Steve Salmirs (lead solo and executive officer). www.geicoskytypers.com
- F-18 Tactical Demonstration – This aerial demo features the Strike Fighter Squadron 106 (VFA-106) flying the Navy's newest tactical aircraft, the F/A-18 Super Hornet.
- Mike Goulian – For the past two decades Goulian has entertained crowds, having earned the U.S. National Advanced Champion title (the youngest ever at age 22 in 1990) and the Unlimited National Aerobatic Championship and represented the United States three times in the World Aerobatic championships. He also was one of the Red Bull international race pilots. www.mikegoulian.com
- Matt Chapman – Sponsored by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and an airline pilot when not performing, Chapman began flying aerobatics in 1984 and quickly worked his way up to the highest level of competition aerobatics – the Unlimited category. At the 1998 World Aerobatic Championships, Chapman was the highest-ranking American pilot, finishing third in the world with a bronze medal and led the Men's Team to a silver medal. www.mattchapman.com
- Rob Holland – Flying the MX2 Aerobatic Aircraft by MX Aircraft Ultimate Airshows, Holland earned his title as current U.S. National Unlimited Aerobatic Champion and World Gold Medal winner in freestyle aerobatics by pushing the envelope of advanced aerobatic aircraft with a mixture of high and low altitude maneuvers. www.ultimateairshows.com
- John Klatt – Sponsored by Air National Guard, Lt. Col. Klatt flies the C-130 Hercules and the F-16 for the Guard and competes in aerobatic contests on both the regional and national level. During his more than 20 years with the Air National Guard, he flew combat, air support and humanitarian missions in the F-16 "Fighting Falcon" and the C-130 "Hercules." www.johnklattairshows.com
- Corkey Fornof – A test pilot, corporate pilot, aerial coordinator, fixed-wing camera pilot, technical advisor, actor and stunt pilot, Fornof has 17,000-plus hours in over 287 different types of aircraft. His resume includes more than 2,600 low-level aerobatic performances, and he formed the first civilian high-performance aerobatic flight demonstration team, using World War II fighters. He also formed and led the first civilian jet demonstration team, flying BD-5Js. www.corkeyfornof.com
- Jason Newburg – Instructed and mentored by numerous top air show performers in the industry (including Michael Goulian, Sean D. Tucker, Jim Leroy, Clint McHenry, Nikolai Timofeev and Bill Stein), he flies high-performance solo and formation performances in several types of aircraft, including the Pitts S1C. He also is the former vice president of the Embry-Riddle Sport Aviation Club and builds aircrafts as well as flies them. www.viperairshows.com
- Cheryl Stearns – A Embry-Riddle alum and former U.S. Airways captain, Stearns also is one the most successful competitive skydivers globally with 30 world records in parachuting (including a Guinness World Record for the most parachute jumps in 24 hours by a woman, 352 jumps Nov. 8-9, 1995), more than 17,000 jumps logged and was the first female member of the U.S. Army's elite parachuting team, the Golden Knights. www.stratoquest.com
- The Plunkett WW1 Aviation Collection – Great Britain's Sopwith F.1 Camel and German Fokker DR.I Triplane will both hit the skies for this special performance. The Camel, named so because of the humped fairing over its twin machine guns, shot down more German aircraft (1,294) than any other Allied plane. The Dreidecker, a small, lightweight and highly maneuverable dogfighter, is best known for its image as the "Red Baron's" aircraft during WWI as it was flown by ace Baron Manfred von Richthofen.
Longtime air show favorite and former airline pilot SkyTalker Danny Clisham (www.dannyclisham.com) will serve as master of ceremonies, and there is a scheduled U.S. Coast Guard Search and Rescue Demonstration. There also will be an Air Show performers autograph session and special concert by country band Little Texas at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 13 at the Peabody Auditorium. Tickets will be on sale soon at the Peabody box office and online at Ticketmaster.com.

Entertainment Powerhouse at Wings & Waves Airshow Oct. 9 & 10
Featuring the Geico Skytpers, Corkey Fornoff, Rob Holland, and Jason Newburg on Oct. 9 and 10
WHO: Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Title Sponsor
WHAT: WINGS AND WAVES AIR SHOW
WHEN: Oct. 9-10, 2010
TIME: Show begins at 11 a.m.
WHERE: Daytona Beach, Fla., off the shoreline centered in front of
the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort
ADMISSION: Free and open to the public
Daytona Beach, Fla., Oct. 4, 2010 – Completing the lineup of entertainment at the Embry-Riddle Wings and Waves Air Show are acrobatic and aerial displays by seasoned aviators and a showing of the Plunkett WW1 Aviation Collection.
Corkey Fornof, who has 17,000-plus hours in over 287 different types of aircraft and has flown on every continent of the world except Antarctica, will demonstrate a high performance aerobatic flight routine at the air show.
Fornof has worked as a test pilot, corporate pilot, aerial coordinator, fixed-wing camera pilot, technical advisor, actor, and stunt pilot, including over 2,600 low-level aerobatic performances. He also formed the first civilian high-performance aerobatic flight demonstration team, using WWII fighters, and is currently director of flight operations and chief test pilot for LoPresti Aviation.
Also in the lineup is the Infamous GEICO Skytypers Airshow Team, a flight squadron of six vintage WWII airplanes performing precision flight maneuvers at select air shows across the United States. The team is the only civilian squadron appearing at air shows and flying the SNJ-2, a vintage WWII aircraft. Of the 11 remaining SNJ-2 airplanes still in existence, the team uses six.
The team performs a low-level precision formation flying routine combined with a thrilling aeronautical demonstration highlighting the unique capabilities of the aircraft. In addition, GEICO Skytypers are often found typing messages using the horizon as a back drop. These messages can be as tall as the Empire State Building and visible up to 15 miles away.
Flying the MX2 Aerobatic Aircraft by MX Aircraft Ultimate Airshows, Rob Holland brings unrivaled performance in the sky with a non-stop, action-packed air show routine. Stepping off his Gold Medal Finish at the 8th World Advanced Aerobatic Championships, he brings a whole new, exciting set of world-class maneuvers to his routine this year.
Holland pushes the envelope of the most advanced aerobatic aircraft in the air show industry today. With a high-energy mixture of high and low altitude maneuvers, he delights and amazes audiences while remaining well within his high margin of safety.
Jason Newburg will also be performing at the air show, bringing the kind of extensive, unlimited-level aerobatic experience that has produced the top air show performers in the industry today.
Newburg has been instructed and mentored by some of the aerobatics community’s most revered figures, including Michael Goulian, Sean D. Tucker, Jim Leroy, Clint McHenry, Nikolai Timofeev, and Bill Stein. He has built several aircraft and maintains many other air show performance aircraft.
A special addition to the air show is the Plunkett WWI Aviation Collection, which consists of the British Sopwith F.1 Camel the German Fokker DR.I Triplane. The Sopwith F.1 Camel, an agile, highly maneuverable biplane, got its name due to the humped fairing over its twin machine guns. It had powerful torque and killed a lot of novice British pilots, but the Sopwith Camel shot down more German aircraft than any other Allied plane.
The Fokker DR.I Triplane was built after the Sopwith Triplane. While not as fast as contemporary biplanes, the Dreidecker could easily outclimb any opponent. Small, lightweight, and highly maneuverable, it offered good upward visibility and lacked the traditional bracing wires that could be shot away during combat.
The Dreidecker is best known for its image as the aircraft flown by the “Red Baron,” Baron Manfred von Richthofen, the leading ace of World War I. Unique in its characteristic three-winged design and small rudder surface, the DR-I was a very capable dogfighter and a deadly foe with the right pilot at the controls.
The show will take place off the Daytona Beach shoreline, centered in front of the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort. The show begins at 11 a.m. daily and admission is free to all.
Sponsorship opportunities are available to businesses, organizations, and individuals for this major family-oriented, tourist friendly aviation event. For sponsorship involvement, volunteer opportunities, visitor information, and media registration, please visit www.wingsandwaves.com.

Daytona Beach, Fla., Sept. 20, 2010 – The Embry-Riddle Wings and Waves Air Show will feature several skilled aerial and aerobatic performances Oct. 9 and 10 over the Atlantic Ocean in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Among the performers is Matt Chapman, who is sponsored by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Chapman is an extraordinary aerobatic pilot who thrills millions of air show fans each summer. He began flying aerobatics in 1984 and quickly worked his way up to the highest level of competition aerobatics – the unlimited category.
Recognized for his skills, he won one of only five slots on the U.S. Unlimited Men’s Aerobatic Team in 1996 and 1998. At the 1998 World Aerobatic Championships, Chapman was the highest-ranking American pilot, finishing third in the world with a bronze medal. He also won the prestigious International Aerobatic Club Championships in 1994 and the Fond du Lac Cup in 1995.
Julie Clark, the first woman to ever fly for Golden West Airlines, also will perform for spectators.
Clark has worked as a commercial airline pilot for Golden West, Hughes Airwest (formerly Pacific Airlines), and later became a captain for Northwest Airlines in 1984. Her aviation career also includes more than 30 years as an air show performer. Known throughout North America for her graceful aerial ballet, Clark has entertained millions of spectators.
In addition to being named an Honorary Snowbird, Clark is the recipient of the prestigious Art Scholl Memorial Showmanship award, the Ninety-Nines “Woman Pilot of the Year” award, and the Bill Barber Award for Showmanship.
Another performer in the lineup is Michael Goulian. Sponsored by ASB.TV, Goulian is one of only a few sport aviators who are popular on a global scale, with an edgy, aggressive, “all-out” style of flying that has become his signature.
On most weekends from April through November, Goulian can be seen flying a mesmerizing and intense high performance solo aerobatic display accompanied by a high-tech choreographed music system that keeps spectators on the edge of their seats.
Goulian has been rewarded with some of the industry’s highest honors. In 1990, he became one of the youngest U.S. National Advanced Champions when he took that title at just 22 years old. He followed that up in 1995 by winning the ultimate in U.S. aerobatics, the Unlimited National Aerobatic Championship.
Goulian has been awarded both the Art Scholl (2006) and Bill Barber (2009) Awards for Airshow Showmanship. He has almost two decades of experience performing at the world’s top air shows and races, having started in the business at age 18.
Also performing is Cheryl Stearns, a graduate of Embry-Riddle, an aviator, and the most successful competitive skydiver in the world. She is a recipient of the Amelia Earhart Pioneering Achievement Award (2007), is an Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame inductee (April 2007), and was inducted into the Embry-Riddle Wall of Fame in Daytona Beach.
Stearns is also a recipient of the Wiley Post Commission’s 2005 Wiley Post Spirit Award, which recognizes an aviation innovator and pioneer who does not receive government or large corporation funding. She is also the current and 23-time U.S. Women’s Parachuting Champion.
Aerobatic displays will also be performed by Greg Poe, who is sponsored by Fagen Inc., and Mike Wiskus, who is sponsored by Lucas Oil. As a 2002 U.S. National Aerobatic Champion, and a member of the 2004 U.S. Aerobatic Team, Wiskus has traveled the world with the same aircraft he will perform in at the air show.
Poe has been chosen for several nationally televised air show freestyle competitions, placing second in the World Free Style Sport Flying Championships in 1999 and third in the World Aerobatic Federation contest in 2000. He has also been featured in such television programs as Modern Marvels, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, the Discovery Channel, CBS News, FOX Sports, and ESPN.
The show will take place off the Daytona Beach shoreline, centered in front of the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort. The show begins at 11 a.m. daily and admission is free to all.
In addition to Embry-Riddle’s title sponsorship, other sponsors of the Wings and Waves Air Show are Central Florida News 13, Magic 107.7 FM, Volusia County, Daytona Beach International Airport, Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort, Chevron, Geico, Fagen Inc., Lucas Oil, LoPresti, ASB.TV, Oracle, Orlando Sentinel, Daytona Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the City of Daytona Beach.
