Capital Air Race set to draw 200,000 By Keith J Fernandez - Organizers estimate that about 200,000 spectators will attend the opening round of this year's Red Bull Air Race Championship in Abu Dhabi, where 15 of the world's top pilots will vie for starter points glory. Alberto Chahoud, Area Communications Manager, Middle East and Africa, at Red Bull, told Emirates Business that last year's event attracted 150,000 people. He said exact numbers were difficult to obtain because the event is open to the public and spectators gather on the city's corniche. "Clearly, motorsports are hugely appealing to people in the UAE and all over the region, with tourists flying in to attend the event.

Developed in 1934, the B-17 entered service four years later. Flying with the Eighth and Fifteenth Air Forces, B-17 formations suffered heavy losses in 1943 as they were forced to conduct missions unescorted. With the arrival of the P-51 Mustang and drop tank-equipped P-47 Thunderbolts, losses dropped dramatically as large groups of B-17s struck targets deep in Germany. FAA to honor 94-year-old veteran flier from Diamond Pilots by TheKathrynReport | George Ceshker made his first solo airplane flight in July 1939. He never wanted to put his feet back on the ground. Decades later, the Federal Aviation Administration is honoring Ceshker's flying time, giving the Richland Hills resident the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award on Friday. The award is bestowed on pilots who "have demonstrated professionalism, skill and aviation expertise by maintaining safe operations for 50 or more years." The FAA has issued 1,473 of them. Ceshker, 94, started flying when he bought a plane in Milwaukee, hoping to learn how to fly. The collection of grand old military planes in the New Zealand Warbird Association's Ardmore hangar bears testimony to the adage that time heals all wounds. Most of the planes hail from the World War Two era but with the end of the war came the end of the planes' purpose in life. To many people the hulking giants became nothing more than a painful reminder of the horror the world had managed to survive. Sixty years later people have a greater awareness of the role the military planes played in both peacekeeping and combat.
