Red Arrows: On The Chopping Block or Not from Ares by Robert Wall | In an earlier Ares post on the topic of the U.K. Strategic Defense and Security Review we warned that there would be a lot of silly reports coming out about looming end-of-the-world cuts. Now the Daily Telegraph has kindly provided a good example of some of the sillyness we can still expect between now and the end of October, when the SDSR is due out. According to the report, the Red Arrows, the Royal Air Force display team, may be on its way out. If you read the report, it basically says that a high-ranking U.K. defense ministry official could not say the display team would not be cut since everything is under review…

Electric Aircraft & Air Show Possibilities from Jetwhine by Scott Spangler | On many levels the 2010 Electric Aircraft World Symposium was a surprise. Sponsored by GE Aviation and held at the EAA museum on AirVenture Friday, I expected a geek fest with a small audience of a hundred or less, because that's the space available in the Founder's Wing, the symposium's original location. But when I hoofed my way to the museum, I saw Kermit Week's Mosquito parked outside. Being an old all-wood airplane, I've never seen EAA do that before. The reason, I soon discovered, is that three or four times as many people had signed up, so they moved all the airplanes out of the Eagle Hangar (except for the XP-51), to make room for everyone…

How can you hide a facility with a 12,500 foot runway, the largest KC-135R wing in the Air Force Reserve Command, and enough ramp and hanger space to take in other military bases' aircraft and other equipment when hurricanes threaten? Perhaps we can't see it through the trees- Grissom has been designated a "Tree City" by the Arbor Day Foundation for 9 years running! …

How I Broke Chuck Yeager's Rock – By Ed Shipley from ASB.tv by Ed Shipley | Some years ago my good friend Jim Beasley and I got a chance to do some formation flying in P-51 Mustangs with WWII legends Chuck Yeager and Bud Anderson. Chuck and Bud were very kind to Jimmy and me and quite complimentary of our flying with them. After one of our flights together they invited Jimmy and I to join them on their historic High Sierra Mountain camping trip. Jimmy and I were stunned. This was the very camping trip we had read about in Yeager's autobiography. Why in the world would these two historic fighter pilots want us to tag along with them? We soon got an inkling when Yeager produced a legal document that defined us as "Junior Campers" and required Jimmy and I to carry whatever they deemed necessary and walk no closer than six feet behind them…

Do not wear underwear made of synthetic fibres when flying from Wright Squawks by Roger Chua | What to wear - In the improbable event of an emergency, the clothes you are wearing can play a significant role in your safety. People wear synthetic blend fabrics because they area easy to maintain and do not wrinkle when spending a long time seated. However, they ignite quickly, shrink, melt, and continue burning after the heat source is removed. In the unlikely event that the aircraft is evacuated even pantyhose contribute to injuries, as they melt and cause burns from the friction generated with contact on the slide…

The Australian Canberra in Vietnam from Aviation Trivia of the Day by JP Santiago | Monday I'd posted about the South Vietnamese Air Force's brief, if not flawed, operation of the Martin B-57 Canberra during the Vietnam War. They weren't the only nation outside of the United States to operate the Canberra in Southeast Asia. In 1967, the English Electric Canberra Mk.20s of the Royal Australian Air Force's No. 2 Squadron arrived at Phan Rang AB, which at the time was home to the USAF Martin B-57 operation under the aegis of the 35th Tactical Fighter Wing (an F-100 Super Sabre outfit)…
