Edward H. O'Hare was born on March 13, 1914 in St. Louis, the son of"E.J." O'Hare, a wealthy businessman and attorney. His parents sent himto Western Military Academy (WMA) at age 13; after his arrival he pursued aninterest in marksmanship, becoming president of the rifle club. In1932, he graduated from WMA, and in 1933 went on to the US NavalAcademy. Many of his classmates from both schools died in WWII.
Upon his graduation from Annapolis he received choiceduty on the USSNew Mexico (BB-40). While he was interested in aviation, all newofficers had to spend two years in surface ships, before specializingin aviation or submarines. Thus in 1939 he started flight training atNaval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola, learning the basics on N3N-1 andStearman NS-1 biplane trainers.
In November, his father was gunned down by Al Capone's gunmen,most likely because he had given the government information useful inits prosecution of Capone. The gangland-style murder made bigheadlines, and the newspapers printed numerous speculations on thecircumstances of the murder. Many of these were less than flatteringand implied that E.J. was involved with the mob. (Ewing &Lundstrom's excellent biography, Fateful Rendezvous: The Life of Butch O'Hare, covers theseevents in great detail.) Arriving at Pensacola after the funeral,young O'Hare moved up to flying more advanced biplanes like the VoughtO3U, the Corsair SU, and the Vought SBU-1 scout bomber (top speed 205mph). In early 1940, he completed the required flying in patrol planesand advanced land planes. ...

Regular readers will recall Yves Rossy, the Swiss adventurer who's succeeded in flying with a wing attached to his back, powered by four micro jet engines of the sort used on model aircraft.




He first flew his wing back in May last year, followed by a crossing of the English Channel in September 2008, both of which were reported on this blog.

This week he attempted to cross the Straits of Gibraltar between Europe and Africa. Sadly, he was less successful, but I've no doubt he'll try again. The Daily Mail reports:

The pilot dubbed as 'Rocket Man' has crash landed in the Straits of Gibraltar after a failed attempt to make aviation history.

Yves Rossy was attempting to complete the first intercontinental flight using just a jetpack.

He was soaring through the skies between Morocco and Spain today when he ditched, parachuting into the ocean.




Mr Rossy was hoping to make aviation history again with the 23-mile crossing between Tangier in Morocco and Tarifa on the south-western tip of Spain.

'It is going to be historic,' he said yesterday. 'No one has ever done this before.'

Clothed in a flame-retardant suit, he leapt from a plane at 6,500 feet and engaged his four-cylinder jet pack to power the eight-foot carbon fibre wing strapped to his back.

The journey - conducted at 130mph - had been expected to take less than 15 minutes.

Fortunately, Mr Rossy was being followed throughout the attempt by a team of paramedics in a helicopter - just in case.

It was late on a chilly Saturday fall afternoon with temperatures barely cracking the 40 degree mark. Three reservists with the 434th Maintenance Group had already completed a full day of work as part of their monthly Unit Training Assembly at Grissom Air Reserve Base. 'Jetman' Rossy Ditches In Africa-Europe Attempt from AVwebFlash Current Issue
Yves Rossy, the Swiss pilot who has set numerous records flying a pair of eight-foot-long carbon-fiber wings propelled by four jet-fueled microturbines, ended up in the chilly North Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday while attempting to fly from Morocco to Spain. A helicopter arrived on the scene and within less than 15 minutes Rossy was rescued, unharmed. He later told the press he was foiled by descending air that was pushing him toward the sea, while flying at about 2,500 feet. "Unstable at this height, that's no playing any more," he said. "So I did throw away the wing and opened my parachute." The flight across the Strait of Gibraltar, about 24 miles, was supposed to take about 15 minutes, but the ditching occurred just five minutes after launch. Rossy will probably try again sometime next year, according to news reports. "He is a man of courage," said Stuart Sterzel, one of the sponsors of the attempt. "He will get up and dust himself off."
