(title unknown) from Aviation Trivia of the Day
Contrary to common belief and the traditions of the Grumman "Iron Works" embodied in the F4F Wildcat and F6F Hellcat, the F8F Bearcat was designed from the outset to be as light as possible to give it the highest performance possible. The big Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine of the Bearcat weighed about 3,000 lbs and the airframe itself weighed in at only 4,000 lbs empty- quite literally making the Bearcat "half-engine"! To make the aircraft as light as possible, many features common to other Grumman fighters were left out or reduced on the Bearcat- not to mention limits on the fuel load and armament. After the Bearcat landed on the carrier deck, the deck crew would have to manually stow the tailhook and used a pry bar that fit into a socket in the wings to manually fold the wings. Even the prop spinner was left off to save weight. ...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/terry-gardner/previewing-the-wbs-emfly_b_481802.html
When Virgin America invited me to attend the in-flight premiere of Fly Girls on Friday, February 26, I hesitated. I only watch American Idol after they've eliminated the friendless contestants who can't carry a tune. (Friends don't let friends sing off-key on national TV.) I don't eat bugs and don't want to watch others digest them. I am anti-reality TV.
But I love to fly.
And this new half-hour docu-series follows the lives of five Virgin America flight attendants at 35,000 feet and on the ground. That sounded like fun. And I was fairly certain flight attendants didn't eat bugs, so I accepted the invitation. ...

The Day of My Life from www.fencecheck.com
... After finishing the remaining checks, we hear "Starfighter one to three ready to taxi." With the engine's howl increasing, we taxi past a dozen Hornets readying for their base attack display. We wait at the end of Runway 05R for our takeoff clearance. We line up. Rick pushes the throttle to 80% at the break position, reduces it to 67% for a moment, and goes and back to 90% for takeoff. My blood pressure spikes when the afterburner sets in, and I feel a gentle push in my back. At 185 knots, Rick gently lifts the nose as we approach the airshow spectators. I give a quick wave to the crowds. It's nice to see a show from the other side this time. The flaps move to the neutral position after lift off, and we're still accellerating. WOW! ...

Told us they would be done next week. Good news is we now have a gentleman designing and manufacturing our gear doors.

Snowed in at Wipaire and waiting for some attention I met N17393 in Oshkosh in 2006, and since then, Wipaire Inc. has bought it and moved it to Minnesota, where I ran into it again a few months ago. The next time I see it, it will have undergone a complete restoration, and will be behind a turbine engine. It will become Wipaire's newest Boss Beaver that will be going to Chevron Oil Company. At the time of this post, it's either completed or nearly done, and I'm counting on Wipaire to send over some pictures of it when it's finished.
Bye bye N2000M from Patty Wagstaff
On Wednesday I flew N2000M back at the Cirrus factory in Duluth. This airplane has served as the PWAS support airplane for more than two years, 800 plus hours and many hundreds of cross country miles. I've hauled my dogs, my parrot Buddha, stuff, ribbon cut poles, supplies, suitcases and a few friends to airshows and events. I've flown it to the Bahamas from Florida two or three times. I've introduced a lot of people to Cirrus Aircraft by flying and letting them marvel at the interior and instrument package. Except for a little nose wheel shimmy early on, I had absolutely no squawks or problems with this airplane. It has just been brilliant and a joy to fly. So, it was a sad goodbye for me to see my trusty little airplane and business tool sitting on the ramp when we took off for Florida. Thanks N2000M. Thanks Cirrus Design.
Oh, and yes, it was really cold when this picture was taken:)
Hello Baby.... from Patty Wagstaff
As sad as I was to say goodbye to N2000M...was I excited to see N271SR, a Turbocharged G-3 SR22...sitting in the customer delivery bay. 1SR is silver with same color trim as my Extra, an Avidyne package with all the goodies, light tan leather seats, and being turbocharged - the option to keep the manifold pressure at sea level up to 25,000' MSL. It's so cool! This airplane is going to be an awesome tool for my team this summer at the high altitude airports we plan to operate out of. I flew it back to Florida with Cirrus instructor Chad Freidrich in order to complete my Turbo training certification. We arrived in St. Augustine last night at 10:30 pm, tucked it away and went home...but I had to go out to the airport again today just to look at it.

Fly the Zeppelin! from AOPA Pilot Blog: Reporting Points by Tom Haines
Flying a Zeppelin is, well, a gas. Now you can experience it yourself. When I wrote the feature article in the February issue of AOPA Pilot , pricing and details of the pilot experience program hadn't been finalized. Now Airship Ventures has the details on its Web site about how you can fly America's only Zeppelin. For about $3,000 you can spend a day learning about the big airship and then climb aboard and fly it around the San Francisco area. Now, there's a Father's Day gift dad will appreciate more than that paisley tie. And don't forget, Valentine's Day is even sooner….(note to self, send URL to Brenda!).
