New World-Record for inverted flat spins…at 81!

Set by California air show pilot Spencer Suderman

El Centro, California – April 2, 2014 – Spencer Suderman, a California-based aerobatic and air show pilot set a world record on March 13 for inverted flat spins, at 81 rotations!

Imagine flying in a small 2-seat aircraft, turning it upside-down, belly up, ceasing forward momentum allowing it to fall from the sky at over 100 miles per hour, then spinning madly like a corkscrew 81 times during the 21,000 foot, 3-minute descent toward the ground.

Suderman and his crew were ecstatic. “I couldn’t be happier,” he announced after landing. “This is so gratifying both personally and professionally.  My first attempt was far from the record and my second attempt was such a near miss that I knew the plane could do it and all I had to do is not get in its way!”

Officially, Suderman completed 81.75 successive rotations starting at 23,000 feet and recovering at 2,000 feet. The documentation has been submitted to The Guinness Book of World Records, who will reply soon with their acceptance of the record into their book.

This was Suderman’s third attempt at breaking the previous record of 78 turns set in 1999. In 2011, he spun 64 times and a few months ago in December 2013 he spun 77 times. With minor modifications to both his aircraft and piloting, multiple sessions of testing and practicing, plus a determination stronger than ever, his March 13 attempt at Naval Air Facility (NAF) El Centro was a resounding success.

And yet, he may not be done. “I’ve got some new modifications up my sleeve that should get me closer to  100+ turns and I’m itching to try them out….IF someone else comes along and manages to break my record,” Suderman added.

About Spencer Suderman
Originally from New York State, Suderman moved to California during high school and embraced sailing, scuba diving and flying. His introduction to aerobatics came in 2000 during an upset training/spin training program and he fell in love with it. In 2002, he started entering aerobatic contests and in 2003, he bought his Pitts Special, a biplane with a strong reputation for aerobatic success, in order to have a better aircraft for future contests. Wanting to fly even more, Suderman turned his competitive aerobatic manoeuvres into an air show act and hasn’t looked back since his first show in 2006. Suderman now spends many of his summer weekends performing at air shows across the western U.S. but  he keeps his ‘day job’ in the information technology department of a major entertainment company, and is working towards an MBA.

About Electroair Ignition
Michigan-based Electroair produces the electronic ignition system that was a critical success factor in Suderman’s world record success. Electroair Ignition is the first viable mass market electronic ignition for general aviation aircraft with FAA certification for most engines and airframes. What this means, is that it brings technology to general aviation that has only been found in cars since the early 1980's. Having always made vehicle engines run smoother, produce more horsepower and burn less fuel, it now allows airplanes to fly higher and travel farther on a tank of gas.

Suderman’s Pitts Special S-2B aircraft was one of Electroair’s flight test aircraft. Together, they wanted to push the limits of the ignition system, and thought of no better way to accomplish that, than to surpass the current record for inverted flat spins.

The Aerobatic Racing Challenge Series™ Announces Its 2010 Winner - Julia Wood

Los Angeles, CA (November 2, 2010) – With pilots all over the U.S. battling for the top spot in the Aerobatic Racing Challenge Series (ARC Series™), Texas’ rookie race pilot Julia Wood fought off her closest challenger, Mike Niccum, to become the 2010 National Aerobatic Racing Champion.

ARC’s Race Operations Director Spencer Suderman stated, “What’s remarkable about Julia is that she flew two completely different aircraft during the season and claimed top honors by mastering successful race strategies in each, the Russian built Sukhoi Su-26 as well as the American made Pitts S-2B. Transitioning between a monster monoplane (the Sukhoi) and a smaller biplane (the Pitts Special) is no easy task. By consistently winning with that kind of multitasking, Julia really carved out a name for herself and deserves her ranking as this year’s number one pilot.”

Julia lives on a ranch north of Dallas, TX and benefited from flying and practicing nearly every day from the runway that she built next to her home with husband Tony, also an ARC Series Race Pilot. Tony races a turbine-powered Sukhoi boasting over 600 horsepower. When asked about how she can defeat aircraft with a superior power advantage Julia explains, “It’s not always horsepower that wins an Aerobatic Race. Managing airspeed and cornering like a sports car help gain the lead rather than just raw horsepower.”

The International Federation of Aerobatic racing (IFAR), which manages, promotes, and sanctions the ARC Series, has greatly popularized Aerobatic Racing over the past two years. The ARC Series has doubled in size since it was first brought to air shows in 2009 and is planning even further expansion, exposure, and notoriety. According to IFAR’s Executive Director Dick Schulz, “ARC Series is being embraced by spectators and event organizers because it’s different and entertaining while offering unique marketing values for the show. I’m very happy how Aerobatic Racing energizes the crowd as well as pleases the sponsors.”
The ARC Series format challenges pilots to race head-to-head in airplanes that often have quite different performance and handling characteristics. After dashing through a series of thrilling aerobatic maneuvers, the first plane to finish the sequence wins the race. With varying pilot strategies and no two aircraft exactly alike, there’s always a battle for the lead and a close side-by-side finish.

Mr. Schulz praised Julia’s winning performance this year by saying, “Julia is a great competitor and role model for all of us. She delivers a top performance each time she flies while being personable, professional, and fun. She always has time for the spectators and is easy to work with. She’s quite an aerobatic pilot and will have plenty of competition next year when she tries to defend her crown. Aerobatic Racing Challenge Series™ - Victory for Spencer Suderman at the 2010 MCAS Yuma Airshow

Victory for Spencer Suderman at the 2010 MCAS Yuma Airshow

Los Angeles, CA (April 2, 2010) – In a see-saw battle for the lead, Spencer Suderman edged out Bill Cornick to win Arizona’s first ARC Series™ race and season opener at the MCAS Yuma Airshow on March 27th, 2010.

Flown before the US Marine Corps, including their Commandant who flew in for the event, Suderman’s race strategy was to keep his sequence of aerobatic maneuvers clean and tight while flying his “Meteor” Pitts featuring its new Penn Yan Aero engine. Out-accelerating Cornick’s “Big Bad Green” Pitts  at the exit of many maneuvers, Spencer Suderman held on for the win as Cornick worked to catch up while cornering through a series of challenging aerobatics.

This thrilling ARC Series™ race, along with a host of military demonstrations and high-performance aircraft, capped a beautiful day at the MCAS Yuma Airshow bolstered by enthusiastic crowds which were fueled by Marine Corp hospitality and a supportive community.

Be sure to see Spencer and Bill along with other race pilots in a heated rematch at the Madera Air Show in central California on May 22 & 23, 2010.

ARC Series™ racing challenges all of their race pilots to strategically fly a sequence of maneuvers that will exploit the weaknesses of their opponent’s aircraft while maximizing their own plane’s advantages and flight characteristics.  Positioning their aircraft side-by-side as they battle for the lead, pilots must fly faster, corner harder, push the limits and pull more G-forces than their rivals.  The first aircraft to complete the entire sequence wins the race.

All of the ARC Series™ race pilots must use a keen mental instinct and raw flying skill to overtake their opponents during intricate maneuvers such as the Avalanche, Humpty-Bump, Hammerhead, and the thrilling Tailslide, a spectacle sure to keep the crowd on the edge of their seats!  Pilots make split second decisions to chase down their competitors in a three-dimensional racing environment, typically resulting in close “come-from-behind” finishes.

The International Federation of Aerobatic Racing (IFAR) is responsible for organizing, promoting, and sanctioning ARC Series™ brand racing.

First Aerobatic Racing Challenge in Northern California, August 21-22, 2010 at the Santa Rosa Air Show

The "Wings Over Wine Country" Air Show, August 21-22, 2010, in Santa Rosa, California, will host the first ever Aerobatic Racing Challenge Performance in Northern California.

Bill Cornick and Spencer Suderman will fly against each other in the Aerobatic Racing Challenge, side by side, each required to complete a prescribed set of aerobatics precisely as outlined.  The pilot who finishes first is the winner.

The Aerobatic Race Challenge series, pioneered by Suderman and Cornick, debuted on the air show circuit in Southern California last show season and was an instant hit.  It is a new and innovative airplane racing format launched in 2009 featuring high-performance aerobatic aircraft competing on a vertical race course that forces pilots to balance mental strategy and precision flight.  Pilots race their aircraft side-by-side through a sequence of aerobatic maneuvers that requires each pilot to fly faster, corner harder, and pull more g-forces.  The first aircraft to complete the entire sequence wins the race.

A pilot’s keen instinct and raw flying skill are challenged with intricate maneuvers such as the Avalanche, Humpty-Bump, Hammerhead and the violent Tailslide, a spectacle sure to keep the crowd on the edge of their seats!  Pilots make split second decisions to leverage their own aircraft’s advantages while seeking to exploit the weaknesses of their opponents, typically resulting in a close “come–from-behind” finish.

The 2010 "Wings Over Wine Country" Air Show announcer, Danny Clisham, will be joined on the announcer's stand for the aerobatic challenge race by Jon "Huggy" Huggins, famed U-2/T-38 pilot, who has announced previous aerobatic challenge races between Cornick and Suderman.

Mark August 21-22, 2010, "Wings Over Wine Country" Air Show in Santa Rosa, CA, on your calendar now, and see the first Aerobatic Racing Challenge ever performed in Northern California.
