SERGEANT CHRIS GSCHWENDTNER RECEIVES ABLE FLIGHT CAREER TRAINING SCHOLARSHIP TWO-TIME PURPLE HEART RECIPIENT WILL TRAIN TO BECOME A LIGHT SPORT REPAIRMAN Sgt. Chris Gschwendtner felt fortunate that he had suffered "only a concussion"  after an explosion destroyed his vehicle on the infamous "IED Alley", the highway from Baghdad to the  city's international airport. It was Valentine's Day of 2008, and the young infantryman had escaped with body and spirit intact. But, not for long.  Gschwendtner was still celebrating his earlier good fortune when a rocket slammed into the shower area at his base in Iraq. This time, he had to be airlifted to a hospital where he stayed for two weeks for initial treatment of a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).  Now a member of the U.S. Army Reserves, Chris recently completed training to earn his Sport Pilot Certificate, and in October will train at Rainbow Aviation in California to earn his certification as a Light Sport Repairman.
