Government Not Required · Rich Davidson, NORDO News | If you haven't heard about it yet, a group of RV'ers recently got together to set a world record for the largest aircraft formation. Sounds like fun hu? Well, what number did you think of when I said "group"? 49, that's the correct answer. I believe they started out hoping for 45 or 46 but ended up with the greater number of 49. Whatever the case, I have to admit, the formation is something to see. It's not their first record though...

Whatever Happened to That Bücker? · Rich Davidson, NORDO News | A while back a fellow antique aviation nut posted a very unique photo online. I was immediately drawn to it. Obviously taken in WWII, the image was unlike any of the other hundreds of thousands of photos you've seen; a Bücker Jungmeister in American paint. Andy Heins, most commonly known for his love of Wacos, isn't one to turn away from any biplane. Vintage flying machines are something he connects with. And judging by what he told me about these photos, it runs in his family. For a great video of a Jungmeister flying in Germany in 1939, CLICK HERE. Here is Andy's response to my request for more information about the photo:...

Royal Observer Corps Recognition Day 1954
In the early 1950's it was the custom for a variety of RAF, RN and USAF aircraft to be flown in so the Royal Observer Corps and the Army Anti-Aircraft Command (then an integral part of the UK's air defences) could examine up close on the ground the friendly aircraft they were expected to recognise in the air. I took the following photos at the 1954 Recognition Day.
First photo is of a 56 Sqn (Waterbeach - based) Swift F1 WK207 'N' complete with squadron red and white checkerboard markings. The Swift was introduced into the RAF in February 1954, becoming the RAF's first swept-wing aircraft, but unfortunately, because of major control problems when flying at high altitude which resulted in several accidents, they were grounded for a while in August 1954 whilst attempts were made to sort out the aircraft's problems. ...

MEDAL OF HONOR: ED W. FREEMAN - The Daily Nightly - msnbc.com
... Back at base, Freeman and the other pilots received word that the GIs they had dropped off were taking heavy casualties and running low on supplies. In fact, the fighting was so fierce that medevac helicopters refused to pick up the wounded. When the commander of the helicopter unit asked for volunteers to fly into the battle zone, Freeman alone stepped forward. He was joined by his commander, and the two of them began several hours of flights into the contested area. Because their small emergency-landing zone was just one hundred yards away from the heaviest fighting, their unarmed and lightly armored helicopters took several hits. In all, Freeman carried out fourteen separate rescue missions, bringing in water and ammunition to the besieged soldiers and taking back dozens of wounded, some of whom wouldn't have survived if they hadn't been evacuated. ...

... Rocket Racing League: The league is working with Armadillo Aerospace to turn two airplanes into rocket-powered racers for a demonstration flight, most likely in November at the Aviation Nation air show at Nevada's Nellis Air Force Base. "We're looking at Nellis, and we have other options, too. We're just not in a rush," the league's co-founder and CEO, Granger Whitelaw, told me. The planes won't appear at September's Reno Air Races, as previously hoped. Whitelaw said the league will wait out the downturn before proceeding with plans for competitions.

In all, Freeman carried out fourteen separate rescue missions, bringing in water and ammunition to the besieged soldiers and taking back dozens of wounded, some of whom wouldn't have survived if they hadn't been evacuated. ...
