Best air show so far in 2011 AIRPOWER11 – ZELTWEG, AUSTRIA

The biannual Austrian air show was held in Zeltweg, in the beautiful province of Styria, the green heart of Austria, on July 1 and 2. The Friday and Saturday air show draws large crowds every 2 years, but this year a record 290,000 visitors were in attendance. For hardcore enthusiasts the show really starts a few days earlier. One could get a five-day package for 180 Euros and be at the airbase from the arrivals day on Wednesday through Sunday, departure day. There were also other spotter packages: Friday and Saturday for 90 Euros or 1-day package for either airshow day for 60 Euros. For enthusiasts, it is strongly recommended getting one the spotter packages since it has many benefits that only this air show provides. It has no less than 13 spotter zones throughout the air show grounds, affording excellent opportunities to view and photograph the aircraft in action. Transportation to these zones are provided from the Spotter/Media Center, since some of them are not very close to the Spotter center, and at least one is not reachable by foot because it is located on the other side of the runway. There is also excellent food and beverages being served all day at the Spotter’s center, the only problem was that it was very difficult to leave the spotter’s zone to go eat since no one wants to miss any of the flying action.

Being in or around an airbase before an airshow, gives the opportunity to see many aircraft in the air that will not be flying at the airshow. On Wednesday two Saudi Arabian Typhoons came in, still with their British numbers on the fuselage since they were on their way to be delivered to Saudi Arabia and were being piloted by British pilots. The Saudi Hawks had arrived before Wednesday, but unfortunately the 2 supporting Saudi C-130s did not come to Zeltweg until Sunday. They stayed at the base in Hoersching. Other aircraft that arrived on Wednesday and Thursday, but did not fly at the show were: Dornier Do 27, Red Bull Cessna CE 208 Amphibian Caravan, Swiss Air Force Beechcraft 1900, Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM) DC-2, Croatian Mil MI-117 , Turkish Air Force Transall C-160 in support of the Turkish Stars Demonstration Team, two Casa C-295M, one from the Polish Air Force and the other from the Czech Republic, Serbian Soko G2 Galeb owed by the Serbian Galeb Flying Club, Belgian SF 260D, French Air Force Mirage 2000, Irish Air Force Pilatus PC-9M, German Air Force 2-seat Eurofighter, USAF C-21 Learjet, USAF C-130, Embraer ERJ-145 from the Belgian Air Force, Antonov An-2, Hungarian Air force 2-seat Saab JAS 39 Gripen fully loaded with Sidewinder and Maverick missiles and LANTIRN pod, Soko G4 Super Galeb from Serbia, German Air Force F-4F Phantom II, Serbian Air Force Antonov An-26, German Luftwaffe Tornado ECR, 2 Royal Air Force Tornado GR.4.

In total there were 222 aircraft representing 22 nations at the show and 8 flying display teams. The organizers did a terrific job in keeping the action moving in the air and on the ground there plenty of aircraft to see. Food vendors were distributed around the grounds and there were plenty of bathroom facilities.

The base is also home of the Fliegermuseum, which is located in Hangar 8, housing two specially marked Drakens, a Saab Tunnan and a Shorts Skyvan among other historically important Austrian aircraft.

The event cost about 3 million Euros and it was sponsored by the energy drink producer Red Bull. This has been the best airshows so far in 2011 seen by the AirshowsReview staff that was present in Zeltweg. It truly deserves a 10/10 rating.

Unfortunately, due to operational reasons, the planned formation flypast involving the RAF Red Arrows and the RAF Harrier at Dunsfold has now been cancelled.
We would like to thank all of the teams who had worked hard to stage this special tribute flypast, but unfortunately due to revised positioning of aircraft on the day, the formation will not now be possible.

Sad word has come via NAG's Betty Sherman of the recent passing of former Unlimited Class race pilot- Clay Klabo, at age 83. Few details are available yet, other than that Clay (residing in the Las Vegas area), had planned to attend this year's Reno NCAR in September to spectate & enjoy seeing old friends again, but passed-away suddenly just prior to the event. More info will be posted as it comes in.

It is with deep sadness, that I must report that Gary Austin, "retroaviation" on this forum, passed away today. Gary was instrumental in the transformation process of the CAF's Liberator to near wartime standard. A master craftsman, A&P, and pilot, Gary had quite a history in warbirds and Reno. He worked for the Ezell's, the CAF, rebuilt several warbirds and was checked out in the CAF's Sea Fury. Rather than repeat a lot of what is posted elsewhere, the most current information is here:

The museum's staff told him they needed someone to restore the segment -- the front section of a glider known as the Waco CG-4A "Hadrian" -- and Cohen, 66, and his Experimental Aircraft Association friends decided to bring it to Wausau.
About 13,400 gliders were built during the war. The one that Cohen has, however, never saw combat. It was manufactured at the end of the war, so it was auctioned off to the public, he said. His glider was first used as a trailer and later as a deer-hunting shack before being donated to the foundation.

Historical McGuire aircraft undergoes renovation from www.mcguire.af.mil
The traffic circle at the McGuire passenger terminal buzzed with new activity Oct. 23 as Airmen from the 305th and 514th maintenance group prepared to clip the wings off the C-118 Liftmaster that has guarded the entrance to the terminal since 1982.
The maintenance groups on McGuire have set out to completely restore the C-118 Liftmaster, the most significant aircraft in McGuire history.
"The Liftmaster is integral to the history of the base," said Gary Boyd, 305th Air Mobility Wing historian. "It made McGuire Air Force Base the gateway to the east."
The aircraft was the first cargo plane assigned to McGuire Air Force Base. Its presence revitalized McGuire entirely, turning it from a combat base into a mobility base. Most of the support structures present on McGuire today were built to support the C-118's mobility mission years ago.

This week's Movie Monday is an pretty amazing find. Buried deep on Google Video I found a Luftwaffe training video from 1944 of the Messerschmitt Me-262 - the world's first jet powered aircraft. According to the description on the video:
The original audio is long since gone. However, the replaced narration is that of Franz Steigler, who flew the plane and watched the film during the war.
The film, which is 46 minutes, is an extraordinary piece of primary source material for understanding the revolutionary leap in technology that occurred at the end of World War II. I watched it transfixed on the amazing history found in this video. What unfolds below is really a demonstration of the fragility of the first jet fighter and its clear tendency to overheat. ...

So, the guy is actually pull-starting that little gas engine, which then spins the compressor enough to fire up the turbine engine. I think that's just cool, crazy, and topped off with more cool! I never knew the Me 262 was really a 4 engine, turbine/2-stroke hybrid! Also very interesting to note that these early turbines had a TBO of only about 25 to 50 hours! Ouch!
