Two workers inside an airport hangar evacuated safely this morning when fire broke out inside the building.  The workers are employees of ComLux, who maintains and refurbished airplanes inside Hangar 5, at the old Indianapolis Airport Location.

Airport firefighters were dispatched to 2640 Cargo Dr at 8:54 for a possible building fire. Upon arrival, they reported smoke showing from the roof, with fire showing on the southeast side of the building. Making a quick investigation and attack on the fire, they quickly realized they needed additional help and called for a second alarm at 9:13 am. Units from IFD, Decatur, Wayne, responded. A call for a 3rd alarm was sounded one minute later at 9:14 am.  This brought units from Plainfield as well as IFD Hazmat and Decon. A total of 40 fire units are involved in battling this blaze.

Firefighters have been working for a little over three hours to contain the fire, cut if off from extension and do it in as safely as possible given the unknown contents of the building at the outset.  According to CE0 of the Indianapolis Division of Comlux, David Edinger (53),  the building currently houses 3 private planes (owned by clients of Comlux), an upholstery shop, and other refurbishing work areas normally found in shops such as this.  Originally, firefighters were concerned about jet fuel in the building, but later learned that fuel from planes brought into the building is off loaded prior to entry.

According to Mr. Edinger, Comlux subleases this building from the Indianapolis Airport Authority and has for 2 years.  The corrugated steel, multilevel structure, is about the size of a football field.

Utilizing aerial ladders, hand lines and thousands of feet of supply line,  firefighters have diligently worked to get ahead of this blaze.  Using K12 saws to cut though the metal deck roof and stop the fire that is traveling quickly along the rubber and tar roof  firefighters remain frustrated in their efforts.  Four times since this fire began, firefighters thought they had the fire under control. 9:22/10:15/10:33/11:33. Each time, they found a hot spot of fire that caused them to re-direct and continue with the aggressive firefight. At this time  firefighters are continuing to work on hot spots, especially in the roof membrane.   At 10:21 am, firefighters on the interior reported to command that 2nd floor had collapsed on the southeast corner.

No injuries have been reported on this fire. Per commands orders, all firefighters entering the structure are being de-contaminated once they exit. IFD/IMPD fire investigators have been called in to assist with the investigation of the fire.

Update: Sun Nov 07 12:26:33 2010 -  According to airport officials, the tentative dollar loss to the 30,000 square foot building is seven million dollars. That does not include damage to any of the planes inside that may have occurred. The number of planes inside the building was upgraded to 5 as well.

Most interesting part of the story is the five aircraft inside????
Being a Bombardier Line Maintenance center - most likely Challengers!!
Each aircraft is worth far more than the 7 million damage to the hangar - what about the airplanes??
