Jim Cheatham, president of Salinas-based Verticare Helicopters & Airplanes and head of the world's only civilian helicopter air show team, died of a sudden illness early Wednesday at his home. He was 67 years old. Cheatham was born Jan. 5, 1942, in Laveen, Ariz. He grew up on a ranch and was taught to fly by his father, who was a B-24 bomber pilot during World War II, when he was a teenager. Cheatham served as an Army warrant officer helicopter pilot in Vietnam and South Korea for four years during the 1960s, flying combat missions and testing helicopter gunships. He joined Verticare in Salinas, eventually taking over the aviation business that included helicopter and airplane training. He flew with his Showcopters helicopter extreme team at air shows, including the California International Airshow Salinas. Last year, Cheatham's company provided a specially equipped helicopter to operate under contract with the Monterey County Sheriff's Office. The helicopter program was cancelled this year because of costs. Cheatham is survived by daughters Stacey Wilson of Soledad, Jodi Serrano of Sacramento, Kylie Pachuilo of Salinas, Amanda Evans of Osan Air Force Base, Korea, and Amy Hayes of Yokota Air Force Base, Japan; a son, Burt Cheatham of Salinas; a sister, Janice Shoemaker of Boerne, Texas; his close companion, Cheryl Harris of Big Sur; and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Verticare hangar at Salinas Municipal.

Silent wings land at Museum of Flight By Janice Wood
The world of quiet flight will be celebrated at the annual Soaring Expo, March 21-22, at Seattle’s Museum of Flight. Full-size and radio-controlled gliders will be on display, while lectures, movies and presentations will be offered all weekend. Representatives of local soaring and RC glider clubs will be on-hand to answer questions. The Expo is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, and free with admission to the museum or museum membership.
