Central IN plane crash investigated by FAA - WAVE 3 - Louisville, KY
SEYMOUR, IN (WAVE) - A central Indiana plane crash is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration. The World War One era bi-plane went down on July 27 in Seymour, IN.
Indiana State Police say Philip Krueger of Freeton had minor bruises and scrapes as a result of the crash.
Krueger lifted off from Freeman Field in his SE 5A single engine plane and reached an altitude of 50 to 60 feet when he lost power and crashed the plane in a field just north of the runway.
According to police, a similar crash happened to the plane in 2008.

On 3rd June 1936, General Walter Wever - the creator and champion of the Ural bomber project - was killed when his Heinkel He 70 crashed on take-off.
On 11th April 1937, the Ju 89 made its first flight.
On 29th April 1937, all development on the Ju 89 and the Dornier 19 was cancelled by the German air ministry.
Wever's vision of a "balanced" Luftwaffe - both tactical and strategic - had suffered a huge blow. The focus would be on the development and production of medium bombers (incuding the Ju 88, the prototype of which is the smaller aircraft in the top image above)...

July 28, 1945 - A B-25 Mitchell bomber (right) accidently collides with the Empire State Building. Flown by Lt. Col. William Franklin Smith, the B-25 was completing a transport mission from Boston to New York. Approaching LaGuardia Airport, Smith was informed that visibility was reduced to zero due to fog. Attempting to land anyway, he became disoriented in the fog and struck the north side of the Empire State Building between the 78th and 80th floors. While the resulting fire was contained, fourteen, including Smith, were killed in the accident.

You all know I love talking about, writing about and generally espousing the virtues of the increasingly modern commercial aircraft cabin. But when an air show strikes, I need to be able to jump out of my comfort zone and cover other parts of the industry, including defense, for Flightglobal.
Last week at the Farnborough air show, I had the chance to interview a Eurofighter Typhoon pilot. But even though this video has nothing to do with IFE or interiors (and falls squarely into the 'light and fun' category), I should note that Panasonic Avionics, Thales and Row 44 are all working on new in-flight connectivity solutions for the defense market. Check out Row 44 partner Hughes' new 'Airborne Comms on the Move' video. Thales also had its defense offering on display at its Farnborough chalet.
Now there is where some real money lies....

STATEMENT REGARDING TUESDAY EVENING ACCIDENT AT WITTMAN REGIONAL AIRPORT #OSH10

        EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wis. - (July 27, 2010) - At
approximately 6:15 p.m. CDT on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, a Beechcraft
Premier business jet registered to Roush Fenway Racing, LLC, was
involved in a landing accident on Runway 18 at Wittman Regional Airport
in Oshkosh.

        The National Transportation Safety Board and Winnebago County
Sheriff's Department have confirmed the two occupants on board were Jack
Roush of Northville, Mich., and Brenda Strickland of Plymouth, Mich.,
who each exited the aircraft following the accident. Both were
transported to local hospitals, with Roush in serious but stable
condition and Strickland with non-life threatening injuries.

The NTSB is leading the investigation into the accident.

All-new 2011 Ford Explorer Revealed at AirVenture Oshkosh - The Auto Channel
Oshkosh, Wisconsin July 27, 2010; On Monday July 26, Ford Motor Company revealed the all-new 2011 Ford Explorer nationwide at just six select venues. Four were in major city venues in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami and one was in Dearborn, Michigan for Ford Headquarters employees. The sixth site hosting the new Explorer was the Experimental Aircraft Association's (EAA) annual AirVenture Oshkosh event, also sponsored by Ford.

In true AirVenture style, where the sky's the limit, the new 2011 Ford Explorer arrived in AeroShell Square at the conclusion of the air show, just prior to the opening day concert, presented by Ford Motor Company, featuring the band Chicago.  ...

CAF’s B-29 FIFI & Aaron Tippin Get Red, White & Loud

MIDLAND, TEXAS (July 27, 2010) – On Tues., July 27, 2010 at a special press conference held at EAA AirVenture 2010, the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) unveiled plans for an extraordinary teaming of two American treasures, the CAF’s Red, White & Loud Tour starring Aaron Tippin and the B-29 FIFI.

The world’s only flight-worthy Boeing B-29 Superfortress FIFI, and country music star/patriot Aaron Tippin will launch the CAF’s Red, White & Loud Tour celebrating America’s freedom through song and the roaring radial engines of one of the world’s most famous warbirds.

At each tour stop, the CAF’s B-29 FIFI will arrive with Aaron Tippin aboard. Once qualified, Aaron will begin co-piloting the heavy bomber to future stops. Audiences of the CAF’s Red, White & Loud Tour will have the once-in-a-lifetime chance to see Aaron perform such songs as Where the Stars and Stripes and the Eagle Fly in front of the world’s only flying B-29, FIFI!

The CAF’s B-29 FIFI will be available for guided tours and the public will also have an opportunity to purchase a ride in the Boeing B-29 Superfortress for the first time in history! Rides can be purchased in advance by visiting http://www.cafb29b24.org/.

In addition, the CAF has announced the first stop on this unique tour will be in Denver, Colo. at the Colorado Sport International Air Show, Aug. 28 and 29, 2010, at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport.

The Colorado Sport International Air Show is excited to be the first stop for not only the CAF’s Red, White & Loud Tour, but also for the CAF’s B-29 FIFI since the completion of its extensive re-engine project. In 2006, the B-29 was grounded by the CAF due to recurring engine trouble and after four grueling years of work by volunteer-members, FIFI will return to the skies with a new lease on life. She has been refitted with new custom built engines that are a combination of the R-3350-95W and R-3350-26WD engines. The re-engine project and subsequent return to flight is due in large part to the generosity of Jim Cavanaugh, founder of the Cavanaugh Flight Museum in Addison, Texas.

About the CAF’s B-29 Superfortress:

When the Commemorative Air Force (then Confederate Air Force) began searching for a B-29 for its collection of historical military aircraft, World War II had been over for 21 years. The Superfortresses that helped end it had long since yielded to new generations of jet-powered strategic bombers and vanished. According to the United States Air Force, no B-29s remained in inventory, even at storage or disposal depots. But the CAF colonels had faith and it paid off.

In 1971, a pilot reported sighting a number of what might have been B-29s in the California desert near China Lake. The CAF learned the aircraft were indeed Superfortresses that had been parked at a Navy weapons center for 17 years. They had been used for gunnery targets and abused by heat, sand and vandals. After much negotiation, paperwork and a painstaking process of elimination to find the best survivor, the CAF added B-29 SN44-62070 to its fleet. That was just the beginning of the task. The complete restoration to CAF standards of airworthiness was a long and expensive project involving more than three years of fund-raising and hard work. Late in 1974, the CAF's B-29 was christened FIFI and joined the other World War II fighters and bombers to preserve the memories and teach lessons of mankind's greatest war.
