Maiden flight of Su-PAKFA a Russian Stealth Fighter from Defence Aviation by Larkins Dsouza | Sukhoi on Friday achieved first flight of its PAK FA advanced tactical front-line fighter. The Russian made Sukhoi T-50, which India refers to as the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA), is the Russian equivalent of the US built F-22 stealth fighter. India is a full partner in the project and the Indian version of the jet will feature several homegrown technologies including the jet's mission computer. The Sukhoi T-50's flight comes nearly two decades after the first prototype of the United States F-22 Raptor took to the air, and Russian officials said it will take another five years for the new fighter to enter service. The test flight took place at Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Russia's Far East.

Derek Erskine—Double Survivor: In this first part of a two-part feature, Rob Neil relates the story of Derek Erskine's RAF service in World War Two. One of very few of "the few" still alive today, Derek also survived a second hazardous aviation career as an early topdressing pilot.
Hellcat Recovery: Aircraft recovery missions are Mark Sheppard's speciality. In this issue, Mark describes the wartime history and subsequent recent recovery of a Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat from Lake Michigan.
Tomcat Remembered: In 2006, Pacific Wings' UK correspondent, Peter Cooper, was extremely lucky to join VF-31 and VF-213 aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt for the final carrier training missions undertaken by the remarkable Grumman Tomcat.
Record—For a Day: Jill McCaw describes the outstanding effort by New Zealand's gliding legend, Terry Delore, when he broke another world gliding record recently (and briefly)
Fuerza Aérea Uruguaya: Wellington-based writer and photographer Erik Roelofs travelled to Uruguay last year, where he and fellow writer/photographer Paul van den Hurk spent time with the Uruguayan Air Force.
Letters from War—Two Days in August: In another poignant "Letter from War", Don Harward speaks from a soldier's heart about two dark days in Afghanistan.

Derek Erskine—Double Survivor from Pacific Wings Magazine by Rob | Derek Erskine is a rarity in having survived two hazardous flying careers—the first as a fighter pilot for most of World War Two, and the second as a pilot in topdressing's dangerous pioneering days in New Zealand. In this first of two articles, Rob Neil tells the first of Derek's two flying career survival stories…

Grand Opening of the Korean War Jets Exhibit at Southern Museum of Flight from Alabama Aviator - Aviation News
On the morning of September 21, 1953, at 9:21 a.m. exactly, Alabama native, Sgt. Tom Feltman, was sitting in his Air Police jeep close to the main runway at Kimpo Air Force Base, South Korea.  He noticed a rather unusual aircraft about to land on the wrong end of the runway.  The aircraft appeared to ignore the traffic pattern, as an American F-86 Sabre was about to land, on the opposite end of the runway, at the same time.  As the strange aircraft touched down and streaked by at a high rate of speed, Sgt. Feltman noticed a communist red star on the aircraft's fuselage.  It was a Soviet-built MiG-15 flown by the North Korean Air Force. The events that unfolded that September morning would lead to one of the most significant stories in American aviation. For the first time, a rare and illusive MiG-15 fighter jet was in the hands of the United States Military following the defection of a North Korean pilot. ...

Red Bull's return from www.windsorstar.com
Picture it. As many as 200 corporate and private planes lined up at Windsor Airport. Luxury hotel rooms and local restaurants filled to capacity. Jet-setters from around the world descending on Windsor.
It's no pipe dream, thanks to a two-year commitment from Red Bull to return to the city this year and next. The decision was facilitated in large part by Ontario's pledge of $10 million toward the event, and that's because MPPs Dwight Duncan and Sandra Pupatello clearly understand the race's importance to Windsor and the province.
There's the enormous economic impact, to be sure. But there's also the "wow" factor; the glitz and glamour that come from having more than one billion viewers around the world tune in to see our fair city. ...

Another key role model for the young Bonhomme was an aerobatic pilot called Richard Goode – a man well known in UK aerobatic circles and who later became an important mentor for Bonhomme. "Certainly without Richard's influence I would not have progressed in the aerobatic world nearly as quickly," admitted Bonhomme, who often says being in the right place at the right time has been a major factor in his success. "Richard asked me to display his Pitts at the World Aerobatic Championship in 1986 when the wind was too ...

Profile 39 - B25 H S/N 43-4267 from WWII Fighter Plane Profiles
It's done - the airplane with a Sherman tank cannon in the nose. The Beast. At least that's what I call it. And it looks beastly too, with that gritty, oil-stained paint job and utilitarian markings.
The accuracy of those markings is still somewhat in question, specifically if the serial number appeared on the tail or not. I have a fair number of 22nd BS photographs and the only shown marks were the squadron logo (a diving eagle clutching a bomb in its talons) and the regular American insignia. However, I am awaiting another source and I may have to add mission tallies and ...

Shock and awe: Female RAF Top Gun pilot tells how she beat the Taliban with deafening noise instead of bombs | Mail Online from http://www.dailymail.co.uk/ | A female RAF pilot has revealed how she terrified Taliban fighters by screeching low over their heads in her Tornado fighter jet - a new tactic to avoid killing civilians with stray bombs. Flight Lieutenant Juliette Fleming, 31, was repeatedly called on to swoop down low over fanatics attacking British and coalition troops on the ground in Afghanistan. The awesome sound of her GR4 jet roaring overhead at 550mph just 100ft above the ground would deafen the enemy and force them to take cover. Flt Lt Fleming carried out her sorties during a three-month posting at Kandahar airfield with 31 Squadron, known as The Goldstars. She said the policy of trying to 'win the hearts and minds' of local people meant that the RAF was dropping as few bombs as possible to avoid killing civilians...

Red Bull Team Aims To Skydive From Space from AVwebFlash Current Issue | Since 1960, nobody has beat USAF Col. Joe Kittinger's record for jumping from 102,000 feet and landing safely with a parachute. Now Col. Kittinger is helping a Red Bull team to break that record, with skydiver Felix Baumgartner hoping to set four world records in a single jump. The team plans to send Baumgartner aloft in a spacesuit inside a pressurized capsule carried by a helium balloon. It will take about two and a half hours to reach at least 120,000 feet. Baumgartner then will jump, and he expects to reach speeds in excess of Mach 1 within about 30 seconds, making him the first person ever to break the speed of sound with his own body. The team plans to launch from a site in North America sometime this year, and will broadcast the attempt live over the Internet. "This is truly a step into the unknown," Baumgartner said. "No one can accurately predict how the human body will react in the transition to supersonic speeds. But we've got to find out. Future aerospace programs need a way for pilots and astronauts to bail out at high altitude in case of emergency."

Missoula Airport Authority lowers rent to keep Museum of Mountain Flying airborne By KIM BRIGGEMAN of the Missoulian  | The museum that brings us the plane that flew smokejumpers to their doom in Mann Gulch in 1949 was thrown a lifeline Tuesday. By a 7-0 vote, the Missoula County Airport Authority agreed to knock off 90 percent of the rent that the Museum of Mountain Flying pays to operate its 25,000-square-foot hangar at Missoula International Airport. The decision means that, counting utilities and a common area maintenance fee that all airport tenants pay, the private museum with a shoestring budget will shell out about $365 a month to stay put...
